Cole's awareness[edit]

One example of the subtlety of the director's touch in this film is the fact that the movie is presented so that, in retrospect, it appears that Cole knew along the Crowe was dead. In the early scene where Crowe is in Cole's living room, Cole says something to the effect of "I think you're nice. But YOU can't help me." It is a basic premise of the movie, of course, that Cole sees dead people all the time and that he knows the difference between seeing the living and the dead. Another premise of the movie is that the dead people he sees do not know they are dead; therefore, he would not expect Crowe to realize he is dead.
