Subject - boy and his glass[edit]

Regarding the glass the boy is holding, the English Heritage catalogue (https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/content/imported-docs/a-e/apsleyhouseartcatalogue.pdf) says "more recent scholarship suggests that the ‘fig’ may in fact be a glass bubble found in expensive façonde Venise glassware".
