Found it! see ref 1 in the article

I just went through the reference (Purchase). Page 930 is in the index and doesn't seem connected to anything. Purchas does mention Newfoundland and John Guy,and a lot of what he did up until 1612 or so, but nothing after that. I think the reference is bad. Savages[edit]

The word is jarring, but is only used in direct quotes from those there at the time. Even Dermer, who endeavored to make peace with the Native Americans, uses the word a several times. ' a meme for the times ' ??? Calixte 03:05, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
