attractions??[edit]

Good point about the city attractions, the only thing I can think of to call a person from Thompson is a Thompsonite, but I don't even know if that is correct.--kelapstick (talk) 21:31, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pessimistic Article[edit]

Crime, high number of vagrants, public urination, store closures yet Thompson still ranked 43 in the "Best City to Live 2011" in Canada by MoneySense magazine out of 180 cities. The doom and gloom pessimistic atmosphere of this article is overwhelming.....Kayoty 17:39, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It actually seems to underplay what a dangerous place Thompson is—claiming most crimes there are mere "mischief", etc. That's not what I'm reading elsewhere. For example, this April 2021 article, "Where is Canada's Most Dangerous City?":

While you would probably suspect a small city in Manitoba’s northern reaches, with a population of no more than 14,000 citizens, to be quaint and peaceful, Thompson was recently ranked as the most violent city in Canada for the third year in a row. Thompson hit the number one spot mainly due to its high rate of violent crimes... The Violent CSI for the city was rated at 570 in 2020, compared to the national city average of only 82.44.

It goes on to explain Canada's Crime Severity Index (CSI), and offers up these statistics:

Sexual CSI assault rates for Thompson came in at 339.32, compared to a national average of 75.89.

Firearm offences reached a CSI of 35.35, compared to the national average of 7.58.

Cocaine trafficking reached a staggering CSI of 1,095.72, compared to Canada’s average of 190.49.

Youth criminal activity in Thompson has a CSI of 445.36, compared to Canada’s average of 13.01.

Thompson also has a homicide CSI of 21.21, compared to the national average of only 1.76.

It's not for me to decide, of course—but it almost seems irresponsible of WP to represent the place in such casually promotional terms. Does it really matter how many amenities a town has, if you're 20 times more likely to be bumped off there than elsewhere in Canada?
