early publications[edit]

Olsen's essay "Thousand-Dollar Vagrant" appeared in not in The Nation, but The New Republic (29 August 1934): 67-69. She never published in The Nation. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 18.186.1.65 (talk) 01:53, 31 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Her early story, that was hailed as a work of genius and gave her a reputation, was called “The Iron Throat” in 1934 "The April/May issue of the newly founded Partisan Review published “The Iron Throat” [their title], part of the first chapter of Olsen’s planned working-class novel. In July, Robert Cantwell, in a broad survey of little magazines in The New Republic, singled out the story as “so fresh and imaginative” that it could be called a “work of early genius.” Olsen was in jail for strike activities when Cantwell’s article appeared." from a Review by Carol Hurd Green of a book by Panthea Reid 'Tillie Olsen: One Woman, Many Riddles' published New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press, 2010, 464 pp, hardcover. Birthdate?[edit]

Can anybody cite that birthdate for me? I've got a textbook in front of me that says she was born "Circa 1913." Linkskywalker 03:23, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Neither of the external links seem to know how old she is either. http://mockingbird.creighton.edu/NCW/olsen.htm http://www.gradesaver.com/classicnotes/authors/about_tillie_olsen.html Linkskywalker 05:24, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I added the birth date 129.120.244.121 01:33, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I found a website that Tillie Olsen's daughters published. It is an online obituary http://www.tillieolsen.net/obituary.php They say she was born in 1912.

When I click on the Tillie Olsen Film Project looking for a documentary on her, the page is in Chinese. Nor does it look like a reference, more like a game with moving parts. 71.51.185.65 (talk) 20:13, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
