I don't believe the party about the belay loop has been officially confirmed: His site does not cite the cause.

I added the citation to the NPS Morning Report (archived by Huecotanks.com, thankfully, since the NPS does not archive it available to the public). That is about as official as you are going to get, unless you get the accident report from the NPS, or dig up the coroner's report. Ratagonia 06:34, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
