Pretty sure that New has been called New since well before 1998! As the Cruel sea sung on their album 'the Honeymoon is Over', long before then:

Correct, it has always been known as New, as opposed to Old- the stout. It was available as Tooheys Draught in bottle and can form. This was changed to New in 1998 for consistency. I've ammended the text to reflect this.
