According to bivouac.com, the Queen Charlotte Mountains include all mountains and ranges on the Queen Charlotte Islands. The bivouac map here highlights all the areas associated with the Queen Charlotte Mountains, including the area where Tow Hill is located. Perhaps Tow Hill would be a relatively small mountain? Er, it's a summit when it's not being a hill......I'm the one who wrote/classified/mapped things for Bivouac, as you might remember, but IMO this was an oversight as techncially the Naikoon Peninsula shouldn't have been mapped as being in the range. Oh waht the heck to keep it simple I'll put it in the range category; but it's surrounded by flatland, for miles.....Skookum1 (talk) 18:40, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, why was the Naikoon Peninsula included with the Queen Charlotte Mountains? Is it similar to the Rainbow Range? i.e. it is sometimes understood to be included with the Coast Mountains but it's really part of the Chilcotin Plateau. Black Tusk 20:12, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tow Hill → Taaw Tldáaw – As of early 2022, Tow Hill has been renamed to Taaw Tldáaw through an agreement between the Council of the Haida Nation and BC Geographical Names, the authority in charge of British Columbia toponyms. The Wikipedia article should reflect this change, following the practice with other restored Haida-language placenames such as Daajing Giids. See:

Wikipedia uses the most commonly used names for article titles, not necessarily the official ones; see WP:COMMONNAME. Volcanoguy 07:35, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It's true that Wikipedia uses the WP:COMMONNAME rather than resting on official names for the sake of officialism — so there might be grounds for revisiting this sometime next year to see if common usage has shifted or not, but it indeed would have been premature to move this right away just because of an official name change. With this discussion already closed, however, I'm simply adding a note that I have created the proposed name in the meantime as a redirect to the existing title, so that people will still get to the right place if they search for it. Name Taaw Tldáaw restored[edit]

Ooops, I just moved the page and added info about the name change before seeing this request move here. If anyone has a problem with it, we can discuss it. I didn't mean to go against an earlier decision and am open to reverting. Though if we do we really should say something about how the name has been officially restored to its original Haida name, and perhaps something about how the Haida are slowly but methodically restoring their own names for their own lands. As far as I can tell from an informal look the restored names are generally respected and used by non-Haida people, but this one is from a fairly recent batch, so perhaps not enough time has passed yet to be sure. Given the pattern of usage for restored names in Haida Gwaii (like "Haida Gwaii" itself), to me it seems unlikely that new batches of restored names won't also be generally accepted. PS: A quick, still informal googling seems to show Taaw Tldáaw as being quite commonly used in the first bunch of hits, from all kinds of sources, including things like BC Ferries, Fisheries & Oceans Canada, and other government sites, and tourism sites, among other thing. @Pfly: I personally don't know what the most common name for this feature is. I was just pointing out in the last move request that Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title. Volcanoguy 03:48, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
