Date of Birth[edit]

Currently, the article doesn't list the lady's date of birth, an odd omission. Is there any particular reason for this, or is it just a minor oversight? JDZeff (talk) 17:31, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good question, JDZeff. I removed a date of birth from this article on August 6, 2022, because it that date was unsourced. Citing sources is, of course, a basic principle of Wikipedia ((Wikipedia:Citing sources). Additionally, a special need for citations applies with regard to elements of a biography of a living person (WP:BLPPRIVACY). I also added the comment "Valid citation required for date of birth for BLP. (WP:BLPPRIVACY)" in the "birth_date" parameter line in the article's infobox.
If someone can provide a date of birth for O'Neil that is supported by a published, reliable source other than a public document, that addition will be good. Unfortunately, too often editors add dates that come from sources like IMDb and California Birth Index, which are prohibited by WP:USERGENERATED and WP:BLPPRIMARY, respectively. Obviously "reliable" is a somewhat subjective term in the phrase "reliable sources." According to WP:RS (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:RS&redirect=no), under the section "News Aggregators," which I think is a fairly close approximation of the IMDB website, which is generally reputable, we have "As with newspaper reprints, the original content creator is responsible for accuracy and reliability should be judged based on the original source." Thus, if the writer considers IMDB generally reliable (I do) then including a birthdate that is published on that site should be adequate due diligence. I think you're holding birthdates to too high a standard here. So I'm putting it back in. Cheers, 2600:1700:A7AF:E000:5504:CD:52CD:D862 (talk) 08:45, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't remember having seen IMDb considered a news aggregator before now.
WP:USERGENERATED includes IMDb in a list of more than a dozen user-generated websites with the statement, "Content from websites whose content is largely user-generated is generally unacceptable."
WP:IMDB says, in part, "The content on IMDb is user-generated, and the site is considered unreliable by a majority of editors." It adds, "A number of editors have pointed out that IMDb content has been copied from other sites, including Wikipedia ...", but I don't see that as being the same as a news aggregator.
I agree that "reliable" can be subjective in some situations, but the lack of reliablilty of IMDb seems straightforward to me. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:04, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There have been probably over 30 discussions over at WP:RSP about why IMDB isn't reliable. The main reason being as previously stated, it's user-generated just like Wikipedia is. When it comes WP:BLP the number of reliable sources is quite slim and there are only very few acceptable options. A truly reliable Secondary source(IE a magazine such as Entertainment Weekly, Los Angeles Times or New York Times. And preferably multiple of these) reporting their exact DOB. Or a social media post from the subject themselves where he or she confirms his or her birthday and preferably either his or her age or YOB in the same post as well. Failing either any of these, that info should kept out of articles for the time being. Kcj5062 (talk) 05:36, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
