Ts'il?os Provincial Park → Ts'ilʔos Provincial Park — British Columbia's main page for this park, and other pages on that site, spell the name as Ts'il-os, Ts'il?os, Ts'ilʔos, Ts'il (symbol for glottal stop) os [sic], Tŝ'ilʔos, Tŝ'il?os, Tŝ'ilʔos, Tsylos, Ts'ylos, Ts'yl-os, and Ts'yl?os. It is spelled exclusively with a glottal stop rather than a question mark in images, implying that the use of "?" is purely out of difficulty of typing "ʔ", and not because that is the proper spelling.

There is no standard orthography for Chilcotin.

Therefore, because punctuation in the middle of a word looks bad, because there is no general consensus to use the question mark, and because using the glottal stop letter to represent the glottal stop sound makes sense, I propose that this article be moved. 155.33.172.164 (talk) 00:43, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose BC Geographical Names, which is the updated version of BCGNIS, and BCGNIS istelf, and CGNDB use the question mark, which is a standard convention for this place name's glottal stop for this language (there are others for other languages; for St'at'imcets (Lillooet) the feds have been known to use a "7" with a tail that goes beyond the baseline, however, as on Dept of Agriculture signs re the potato quarantine on the Pemberton Valley. I just tried to find this park in the Protected Areas of British Columbia Act but for some reason it's not there, not on the one page of parks anyway (was Chilko Lake Park in a proposal name, and Xeni Gwet'in Park in another, but neither of those names are there either), but another example of the use of the question mark is in Xwaḱwǝ?naxdǝ?ma/Stafford Estuary Conservancy (those 'w's are supposed to be superscript but didn't copy-paste that way). The Protected Areas Act is the legal documentation for this park and is an "official" standard; the only other "official" standard would be that in use by the Xeni Gwet'in First Nation government; nothing else would suffice.Skookum1 (talk) 04:36, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, because "Ts'il?os", however odd-looking, appears to be more common (e.g., see Google Books) and is used in BC Geographical Names (as Skookum1 says). At least it's better than "Ts'il (symbol for glottal stop) os". Ucucha 04:41, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ts'il?os Provincial Park → Ts'ilʔos Provincial Park – Use glottal stop letter <ʔ> instead of question mark <?>, as on BC Parks webiste. Note the BC Geographical Names entry page uses the question mark <?> but notes the Tsilhqot'in orthography in a picture which shows a glottal stop letter. See also BC Geographical Names entry for the Tŝ'ilʔoŝ moutaint that gives its name to the provincial park, it actually has the glottal stop letter in its entry name and also features an image showing the correct spelling with glottal stop. (Note: I only saw the 2011 more request discussion after starting this one.)
