Consequences of Germany/Republic of Ireland match[edit]

It says on the UEFA web site that Germany will qualify both themselves AND the Czech Republic with an away win. I've heard somewhere that this isn't so, can someone explain why? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Funkyduncan (talkcontribs) 18:00, 15 September 2007

If either Wales or Cyprus win all their remaining matches and Czech Republic lose all theirs, then Wales or Cyprus will qualify above Czech Republic, regardless of the result of Germany v Republic of Ireland. - MTC 17:38, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If all of Wales, Rep. Of Ireland and Cyprus all lose then the Czech Rep. and Germany will both go trough Clyde1998 16:50, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wales v Cyprus[edit]

Technically, Cyprus is not eliminated with a draw. Czech Rep. will not be qualified on the next matchday (Oct 13). Kopfballungeheuer 23:32, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How is it that Cyprus wont be eliminated with a draw and Wales will be? They both have the same points, Wales has the better head-to-head record bw the 2 and Cyprus has a negative Goal Diff. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.96.33.145 (talk) 23:03, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If Wales and Cyprus draw on Saturday, Wales and Cyprus will be 9 points beind Czech Republic with 3 matches remaining, so we must check the possible tiebreakers with the Czech Republic:
  • Wales have played both matches against the Czech Republic; one was a draw, one was a win for the Czech Republic. Czech Republic would win that head-to-head, so for Wales to finish above Czech Republic they must have more overall points.
  • Cyprus still have to play one of their matches against Czech Republic, having lost the first 1-0. If they win by 2 or more goals then they will have a better head-to-head versus Czech Republic, meaning equal points with the Czech Republic is just enough in the right circumstances.
  • If both Wales and Cyprus tie with Czech Republic, Czech Republic will win the mini-group as they have already scored enough points to win that.
Republic of Ireland do not come into this as both Wales and Cyprus would need to beat them in order to cause the tie with Czech Republic.
So Wales cannot beat Czech Republic in a tiebreak but Cyprus could, meaning Wales are eliminated if they draw on Saturday. - MTC 05:32, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Doesn't matter now anyway, thanks Czech for sorting out that argument. F9T 19:49, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
