This article is desperately in need of some work. Presently consists mainly of trivia.

Suspect assertion[edit]

The assertion that the LHA is capable of holding large amounts of LCACs is suspect. Most amphibious assault ships hold between 2-4. Further, as stated on http://www.tarawa.navy.mil "Although the LHA usually doesn't carry Landing Craft, Air Cushioned (LCAC) boats onboard, they frequently operate with them and control them." —Preceding unsigned comment added by Odin997 (talk • contribs) 17:14, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good catch! That was part of a large uncited text addition added over three years ago. The original sentence was: "It's cargo areas are capable of holding an incredible amount LPD's, LCAC's, Tanks, Trucks, Cannons and just about anything the Marine Corps Combat Cargo Division and Navy SeaBee's need." Note that the first item is "LPDs"!

Accordiing to my sources, the Tarawas can carry one LCAC, while the Wasps can carry up to three. No ship can carry an LPD, except perhaps a floating dry dock! - BillCJ (talk) 17:38, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A LHA typically carries two Mk-8, two Mk-6 and three LCU craft. The sixes belong to the LHA, the others come from Assault Craft Unit Two. I've never seen an LCAC in an LHA (and who would want to, it's a useless high speed lightweight toy) but there is ample space to get stuff you would not believe in that welldeck. The Nassau carried 4 LCU's in her well deck 2 on each side. There is an Island or column in the center of the well deck an this prevents use of LCAC's. I have seen them park one on the stern gate once in a while but not often. I served on her from 1998 to 2003 she is set to be decommissioned in March 2011. You wouldn't believe how tight they pack the well deck I worked in the Lower V storeroom for S-6 it was always an adventure getting stuff out of there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.161.77.16 (talk) 21:14, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Current location?[edit]

Article says Nassau is with the reserve fleet in Beaumont,Texas since decommisioning in 2011. Google Maps shows Nassau tied-up at the NWS Earle "trident" in New Jersey, looking to be in anything but active configuration?
