• UAB School of Medicine → University of Alabama School of Medicine
• University of Alabama School of Medicine → ?

– The Facts and Figures page on the School of Medicine website lists the official name of the school as "University of Alabama School of Medicine." The Wikipedia page "University of Alabama School of Medicine" already exists and redirects to the current "UAB School of Medicine" page. The proposed move should switch the article title and the redirect so that the main article is titled "University of Alabama School of Medicine" and so that "UAB School of Medicine" redirects to the "University of Alabama School of Medicine" article. It should be noted that this move may be considered controversial; although the official name of the school has not changed since 1969 when it was named the University of Alabama School of Medicine, the past few years have seen debate over what the official name should be (see: UA and UAB medical school alumni groups compete for members). University of Alabama School of Medicine → University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine – The official name is University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. Nowhere on the website, as mentioned in the "talk" section of this article, is it called the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Examples can be seen anywhere on the website including the official code of courses for the department being UABSOM. https://www.uab.edu/medicine/home/education/md-program shows this, as well as the biography for the dean of the University of Alabama of Birmingham School of Medicine https://www.uab.edu/medicine/home/about/leadership/team/selwyn-vickers 71.45.120.102 (talk) 22:10, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

The "(UAB)" is not necessary to be shown, however no source shows this as the University of Alabama School of Medicine. The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, which is a separate institution, has the University of Alabama School of Medicine which is independent of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. Major independent sources such as CNN, Fox, and other independent and reliable sources use the common name "University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine." • You say that the University of Alabama School of Medicine (in Tuscaloosa) is independent of the medical school in Birmingham, is that correct? If it is independent, then why does https://www.uab.edu/medicine/home/campuses/tuscaloosa describe the Tuscaloosa institution as a regional campus of the same medical school, and list the dean of the school as being in Birmingham? Also, I notice that the University of Alabama Wikipedia article appears to say that medical students at the Tuscaloosa campus receive their degrees from the same medical school as the one in Birmingham. —BarrelProof (talk) 23:41, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

Note: I just created this as a redirect, as long as nobody edits the redirect, this page can be moved over it later if there is consensus to do so.   • The history page about this school of medicine, found at https://www.uab.edu/medicine/home/about/history, says it is "known as the 'University of Alabama School of Medicine'" (since 1969). Is the medical school's website incorrect? Per the previous RM discussion in 2012, there was also a "fact & figures" page published by the university that said the same thing. Unfortunately, all of the sources that are cited in the article are published by the institution itself. The same is true for both sources mentioned by the proposer of this move. Which term is more common in independent reliable sources? —BarrelProof (talk) 23:41, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
    • A search for reliable sources shows the name most commonly used. Apart from that single page linked, the same website uses the common name as the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine or UAB School of Medicine on almost every single instance that it is mentioned. Additionally, WebMD (https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20200402/how-silent-covid-spreaders-may-be-infecting-others) DailyMail (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8143845/Malaria-cure-coronavirus-promoter-cryptocurrency-hustler-fake-Stanford-University-claim.html), Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/under-trump-coronavirus-scientists-can-speak--as-long-as-they-toe-the-line/2020/04/22/a0a67c12-84b9-11ea-878a-86477a724bdb_story.html), The Hill (https://thehill.com/opinion/healthcare/509795-international-medical-school-graduates-need-an-easier-path-to-practice-in), US News and World Report (https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2019-03-04/teen-who-went-against-anti-vaxx-parents-to-testify-before-congress) are just a short few examples of independent sources using the common name. Other institutions in the same system such as the University of Alabama that is located in Tuscaloosa refer to this as UAB School of Medicine (https://cchs.ua.edu/medical-student-education/). The official media releases from the school go by the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine or UAB School of Medicine as well as all official social media channels for the school. The logo on UAB's website discussing branding says "UAB School of Medicine" with "University of Alabama at Birmingham" underneath it.
