a cappella or not?[edit]

Some IPs disagree with the group being classified as a cappella, since they use drums. I think the porpose of the band is in fact combining elements of a cappella music with heavy/power metal (they are self-labeled as "a cappella hero metal"). It would help if other editors could add their opinions. Victão Lopes I hear you... 23:29, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well it's not technically completely 'a cappella' it's the closest in metal and i can't think of what else you could logically call it, a cappella metal seems the best fit.Abyss of enchantment (talk) 01:44, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would actually dispute them as not being heavy metal at all (though heavily inspired by it) for lack of actual distorted guitars, which is the one inescapable requirement of the genre. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.177.0.198 (talk) 03:38, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, but their voices are explicit attempts to sound like real guitars...it's just like Apocalyptica with their cellos. I think we should concentrate on the way they sound instead of the looking only at the technical aspects. Victão Lopes I hear you... 20:16, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bad example, Apocalyptica is Cello Rock, sourced and verified. Don't kid yourself, both these groups emulate but they in no way confound my ears to think they sound like guitars at all. A distorted cello sounds like a distorted cello, its simple. Hammond organs were distorted and played heavy in the late 60s to mid 70s, but without a big guitar presence it didn't make it anything else than varying stands of Psychedelic Rock and Krautrock. They are mainly an a cappella band, they have all the criteria. What the band refer to themselves as is irrelevant by guidelines. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.52.40.60 (talk) 10:13, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I would argue that while they do not have guitars, they do have instruments, namely drums, thus making them not technically able to be classified as a capella. As you say, they lack guitars and therefore cannot be classified as Heavy/Power Metal. The purpose of Genres is not to just place bands where their instrumentation allows, but to place them with like sounds and styles. Classifying them as Heavy or Power Metal would be the best fit as it is closest to describing their sound. Reelmusik (talk) 04:06, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalization[edit]

The correct capitalization appears to be "Van Canto", not "van Canto". The band uses this capitalization themselves consistently throughout their website - I checked every page on their site, both in English and German, and in every case (except for the question "What does ‘van canto’ mean?" on the FAQ page) they capitalize it "Van Canto". Accordingly, I've edited the article to change it to "Van Canto" throughout.

I also removed the lowercase tag, so that the article title displays as "Van Canto" instead of "van Canto".

I also removed the "stylized as van Canto" phrase. I assume the basis for this assertion is the band name logo as rendered on their album covers (and on the lead singer's tattoo), in which it looks like the V is lower-case and the C is upper-case. However, strictly speaking, the logo is rendered in mixed upper case, lower case, and small capitals, kind of like this: "vAn CAnTo". I don't think we can use the album cover art as indicative of how the name is "stylized" in common usage. 69.45.101.6 (talk) 19:08, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Discography[edit]

This page is rather inconsistent. It should either have links to the individual albums, whom should then be on separate pages, or it should have all released albums on the main page. I would think the separate pages would be better, then being more consistent with other band's pages. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Reelmusik (talkcontribs) 03:55, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We once had articles for every van Canto album, but all but Break the Silence were deleted. Victão Lopes Fala! 19:25, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Any clue why? The way the albums are handled here is completely alien to how every other band's albums are handled, unless style guides have changed recently. Plus, why save just that one album, but no others? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.75.152.157 (talk) 03:01, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Basically they had few or no sources to indicate notability. Break the Silence had a little more sources, so it could stay. But the guidelines instruct us to merge non-notable albums to the "Discography" section of the bands. Victão Lopes Fala! 21:09, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Request for comment: new WikiProject for a cappella-related articles[edit]

Hi there! To any and all interested: I've proposed a WikiProject dedicated to a cappella. This would be a group of editors interested in improving the quality of articles related to a cappella. If you're passionate about a cappella—ranging from the Pentatonix to groups like van Canto, or perhaps pop culture representations like Pitch Perfect and The Sing-Off—please check out the proposal and share your thoughts!

Here's a link to the proposal for WikiProject A Cappella.

If you could see yourself contributing to an article related to a cappella (like this one), please consider joining!
