Whatever happened to "soldier"? During my time in the military, which ended a decade ago, we were still soldiers. It appears that this new and much more aggressive term was created by W and his dream team as part of their anti-terrorist (i.e. turrist) scare tactics. Maybe we can look forward to reverting it back to soldiers in the near future.... one can only hope!

Right on, the ditto heads in DOD don't seem to realize that the military's biggest role over time is readiness training and providing a deterrent to aggression; most service members will not be "warfighters" in the connotation of sustained daily combat operations but will be more appropriately "peacekeepers" or "freedomfighters"; the term "warfighter" is undoubtedly selected as being a macho nom de plume to replace the more general but not as catchy as "Service Member" Former soldier (talk) 17:20, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agree with much of the above. It also appears to be a couple of other things too: a slick marketing term used by defense contractors to advertise, and a more inclusive term to include not just the military but also covert operations and the likes of private contractors like Blackwater. It smacks of Orwellian newspeak. Frankly it needs to redirect to something other than 'soldier'. Seems like Warfighter should redirect to Medal of Honor: Warfighter.
