race[edit]

now i usually say that race doesn't matter and i really don't care what anybody's race is, but gordon mitchell is really begging the question due to his "whitey" nickname. was "whitey" mitchell, in fact, white? WOULD fellow jazz musicians have nicknamed the bassist "whitey" on account of his race? (the term, at the time, was thought of as somewhat derogatory.) or was mitchell a light skinned african american or mulatto (half and half)? he recorded and performed with many noted jazz musicians, black and white. benny goodman, gene krupa, and buddy rich, but also ella fitzgerald, dizzy gillespie, and lester young. as a television writer, he worked on "the jeffersons" and "good times," as well as the white bread "mary tyler moore" show and "all in the family," with its racist "archie bunker" character. "whitey" was clearly at ease with white AND black people and he was accepted by members of both races. my guess would be that he was bi-racial. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.127.228.117 (talk) 20:46, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
