Removed USAF astronauts tag

I removed the USAF astronauts category tag from the article and edited the statbox. Unlike true USAF astronauts like Pete Knight, Dana was not part of the Air Force when he earned his astronaut wings in the X-15. He should thus be considered a NASA astronaut (albeit not a traditional one, of course). YLee (talk) 12:51, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

On second thought, I'll change the statbox label to "NASA Research Pilot," which is what Joe Walker (also a NASA employee when he reached space)'s already read. YLee (talk) 12:57, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

According to the article, he rates the USAF Astronaut tag because "From 1960 through 1962 he was a pilot astronaut in the U.S. Air Force X-20 Dyna-Soar program.". He later became a NASA employee who flew in space on an X-15. Rillian (talk) 20:57, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Dana was a NASA employee both when he was selected for the Air Force Dyna-Soar and for the Air Force/NASA X-15, and he qualified for astronaut status in the latter program. It makes sense to me to put in the infobox what label fits Dana best, and that's NASA Research Pilot (or NASA Astronaut), not USAF Astronaut.

For someone like Robert Henry Lawrence, Jr. it's USAF Astronaut because he was selected for MOL, an Air Force program, as an Air Force officer. If Lawrence had lived, transferred to NASA after MOL's cancelation, then flew on the space shuttle, then he'd be listed as a NASA astronaut even if he (as many NASA astronauts were, and are still) remained an active-duty military officer. On further research, those like Richard Truly who transferred from MOL to NASA are listed in their infoboxes as both military and NASA astronauts, not just NASA. Still, this does not affect Bill Dana (who, again, was assigned to Dyna-Soar and X-15 as a civilian NASA employee, not military). YLee (talk) 06:36, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
