Railroad[edit]

From examining https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2b/Organizational_diagram_of_the_New_York_and_Erie_Railroad%2C_1855.jpg. It seems clear that wipers were associated with the engines, and were grouped with the enginemen and the firemen, whereas 'cleaners' were employed underneath the general car inspectors. Wipers seem to have been employed to be both on the train and also at each terminal. I cannot find a secondary source for this (20040302 (talk) 12:07, 21 January 2021 (UTC))[reply]

Please explain...[edit]

... 'chipping in the bilges'. What exactly is this task and where is it carried out? 2001:8003:3020:1C00:ACD6:5452:D399:5FE5 (talk) 06:36, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The bilge on a ship is below the bottom deck of a ship usually below the deckplates. In certain areas of the bilge, particularly shaft alley, water may collect and eventually form rust which must be chipped away and then painted. Since this activity is not technical in nature, it falls to the wiper to perform the task. While the deckplates are up there is a good opportunity for the wiper to learn the function of piping, valves and sometimes wiring that run under the deckplates. To be promoted to oiler, the function of piping and valves must be learned. Hope this helps. Cuprum17 (talk) 09:38, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
