Superfluous words[edit]

According to MOS:DAB#Individual entries, "The description associated with a link should be kept to a minimum, just sufficient to allow the reader to find the correct link." Space pen and space toilet imho are unecessary for disambiguation therefore I have removed them. Abtract (talk) 09:59, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Does this mean that when JHunterJ added the "or" to Rinku was incorrect? Don't think so. The guideline does not claim that this manner is incorrect, or correct. It's appears neutral so, IMHO, this is not so unnecessary that it should be removed. Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 19:19, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

These words are clearly not needed to navigate to the correct article ... if readers knew "space pen" they would not be looking for ZG pen, they are not needed so they are superfluous. You are fond of quoting JHunterJ, but bear in mind "J" did not re-introduce these words when editing this page, so presumably saw no need for them. Abtract (talk) 19:49, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I assumed he forgot, as there are things he sometimes overlooks. Regardless, I've asked J to join in on the discussion. Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 19:55, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't click through those links, so I gave this decision no consideration. When linking to redirects, sometimes it is useful to specify the eventual title of the article, so as to avoid surprising the reader. There is no policy or guideline about it though, AFAIK. Neither one of you should be reverting the other over it without reaching an agreement first. Sesshomaru, edits done on one page can be used as a model for edits on another, but they make lousy justifications for it in the absence of a guideline or policy -- what may be consensus for "Rinku" does not have to be consensus for Zero gravity (disambiguation). Abtract, saying "Zero gravity pen or space pen" or "Zero gravity pen or space pen" is not overlong, and it's possible that the guidelines on brevity can be read to pertain to the description portion of the line (the part after the comma). If this really is an important point, we can ask on WT:MOSDAB for ideas on redirect entries and identifying their targets. -- JHunterJ (talk) 13:22, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK thanks, I take your point. Abtract (talk) 13:54, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also apologies for not noticing the "Space Pen" is a capitalised brand name. Abtract (talk) 08:29, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Seems Abtract complies so can the page be unprotected? Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 18:53, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. No biting or kicking. —EncMstr 19:18, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
