Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi[edit]

I hyphenated 'anuttara-samyak-sambodhi' per common usage; otherwise it's unreadable. Normally, I wouldn't change a direct quote, but since this is certainly a translation from Sanskrit, it should be okay. Tempted to include: ("Supreme perfect enlightenment"), but that's probably not okay (?). ~Eric F 74.60.29.141 (talk) 14:12, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hyphenation is okay, but still does not link; "Supreme perfect enlightenment" asks for an extra explanantion. I've corrected the link; it now goes to Enlightenment in Buddhism, which gives nuances to the terms. But hey, I admit: That's my hang-up, avoiding idealization of "enlightenment". As far as I've understood now, "enlightenment" is (sudden) insight into sunyata/Buddha-nature/etc, where-as the "perfection" is to be reached by constant effort. "Being a Buddha is becoming a Buddha", and "The Buddha and Bodhidharm are still practicing". Joshua Jonathan (talk) 19:23, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"age of mofa"[edit]

As stated, he lived in ...an age of mofa; presumably, not the age of mofa (Mappō) -- is there a proper link, or just leave it with the parenthetical description? ~E 74.60.29.141 (talk) 21:34, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Now that I've thought about it, the latter is probably best.

The source says "an", but as far as I know Buddhism sees time as 'circular', so I guess there will be repeated ages of degeneration. But that's a guess. Anyway, I've put in a link to mappo. Joshua Jonathan (talk) 06:22, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Heller (2009)[edit]

I need to learn how to do 'sfn' formatting; anyway... Heller (2009) probably needs to be74.60.29.141 (talk) 04:59, 18 October 2012 (UTC) moved from 'Further reading' -to- 'Sources'. Btw, what would happen if somebody adds a non-sfn ref? ~E 74.60.29.141 (talk) 19:43, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Of possible interest:

Heller, Natasha (2009); Buddhist Manuscript Cultures; Pt. III, ch. 7, pp 109-123
Description: "Between Zhongfeng Mingben and Zhao Mengfu: Chan Letters in Their Manuscript Context"
Publication Date: 2009; Additional information available at the publisher's source page

Tempted to add this to 'Further reading', but this would be "Heller (2009-B)", right? -- am afraid I'd mess up the the sfn stuff. ~E74.60.29.141 (talk) 03:54, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
 Done:

  • Changed snf refs for 'Heller 2009' -to- 'Heller 2009-A';
  • moved 'Heller 2009-A' cite from 'Further reading' to 'Sources';
  • added 'Heller 2009-B' cite to 'Further reading'.

Seems okay, but should be checked by somebody who knows what they're doing. ~E 74.60.29.141 (talk) 04:34, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See Template:Sfn and Help:Shortened footnotes for explanations. I choose {{sfn}} because it gives the shortest inline citation, and it's very useful when you're using the same source at different pages/articles. The 2009-A and 2009-B formatting is correct. I would prefer to have Heller 2009-A also with the "Further reading", since it gives more info on Zhongfeng. But that would be a doublure, which might not be in accord with Wikipedia-guidelines for Wikipedia:Further reading. Joshua Jonathan (talk) 05:16, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"flowers in the sky"[edit]

This seems to be a reference which needs further explanation. Perhaps I need to read the full translation? ~E 74.60.29.141 (talk) 20:45, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

P.s.: My apologies for being such a nit-picker; but, being of Perfect Mind, any lack of understanding must be due to a failure beyond my Self. ;) ~E 74.60.29.141 (talk) 20:55, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Aha!: [Yes, I know: this requires 'context']

Penetrate ignorance

With enlightened wisdom.

Knowing it to be like sky-flowers

They are able to escape transmigration.

It is like the man in the dream

Who has nothing to grasp upon awakening.

Awareness is like space

Equal, changeless.

From:[1]
... "Flowers in the sky" is the translation of the Japanese word "Kuge" (ch. 19; "Shobogenzo" by Dogen Zenji) sky stands for "empty" thus "Flowers in the empty". This corresponds to the principle of the insubstantiality (one of the three seals of Buddhism) thus that everything exists and nothing is real, in the sense that nothing has its own fixed reality, fixed measure, fixed form, nothing that is alive, has its own nature or independent, autonomous substantiality. Buddha's nature and the nature of illusion are the same roots. ~E74.60.29.141 (talk) 00:58, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I like the nit-picking; details do matter. Thanks for correcting all the typos! Joshua Jonathan (talk) 05:27, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

DOI[edit]

The 'DOI' for Heller (2009-A) is currently "DOA" (Dead link, "On Arrival"). I can't figure out where I went wrong - perhaps it's not me? (wishful thinking)
DOI is from here:[2]; ditto here:[3]. ~E 74.60.29.141 (talk) 17:54, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Eh - what's a DOI? Joshua Jonathan (talk) 04:41, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Uhm... I was hoping you'd know. My guess is "Digital Online Index" - seems to be mostly used for journal-type articles. Something like OCLC? I thought when I mess something up, you were supposed to fix it. ;) ~E 14:53, 19 October 2012 (UTC) - In this case it's (from link above): DOI: 10.1353/jas.0.0020
Okay, it's Digital object identifier - When all else fails, read directions.

Oh well, it would have been nice if it worked - I like the idea of "automagic-citation". ~E 74.60.29.141 (talk) 15:44, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
