Tambapanni is a name derived from Tamira Varni or Tamirabarani (in Tamil). This means the colour of copper or bronze. A river by this name is located at close proximity across the sea in Thirunelveli District (Tamil Nadu). A derivative of this name is Taprobane (Greek). Tambapanni is a Pali version of the name Tamira Varni.
