4 South Indian Film Artistes' Association President R. Sarathkumar and his wife Raadhika Sarathkumar held a press conference on January 4, condemning the acts of pirated films being uploaded on the Internet and sales of pirated DVDs. It was discovered that an unedited full-length version of Jaggubhai, starring Sarathkumar and directed by K. S. Ravikumar had been uploaded online prior to release. Earlier in the week, Sarathkumar and police officers had raided a theatre where pirate copies were being made.[17]
23 The 56th National Film Awards winners were announced. Director Bala won the Best Direction Award for the film Naan Kadavul, whilst V. Moorthy was awarded the National Film Award for Best Make-up Artist for the same film.
February
6 A grand function was held by FEFSI to acknowledge the contribution of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. Karunanidhi, to the Tamil film industry. The event which occurred at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai, became the largest social event in the film fraternity with songs, dances, drama and poetry being performed by actors. Amitabh Bachchan attended as a guest of honour.[18] The event also became noted for actor, Ajith Kumar's outburst against FEFSI organisers, with Ajith's move gaining much sympathy.

28 India's Supreme Court dismissed all cases against Tamil actress, Kushboo, who had spoken in support of the right of women to have pre-marital sex. Cases were ongoing since 2005 and her comments had been denounced by nationalist groups.[19]
August
7 Idea Cellular's 57th Filmfare Awards South was held in Chennai to recognise the best work of 2009. Kanchivaram picked up four awards including Best Actor for Prakash Raj and Best Director for Priyadarshan. Samudrakani's Naadodigal' won Best Film whilst Pooja picked up Best Actress for her role in Naan Kadavul[20]
September
3 Leading Tamil actor Rajinikanth's younger daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth on Friday tied the knot with Ashwin Ramkumar, a city-based entrepreneur at a high profile ceremony in Chennai. The event was attended by major politicians and several film actors.[21]
October
1 India's most expensive film, Enthiran was released worldwide. The film, a ten year dream project of Shankar, starred Indian cinema stalwarts Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai in the lead roles, and was produced by Kalanidhi Maran of Sun Pictures with A. R. Rahman being the music composer. The film upon release, won unanimous praise from critics and subsequently went on to become the highest grossing Indian film of all time.[22]
December
15 The Chennai International Film Festival (CIFF) started showing more than 130 films from 43 countries at three venues Woodlands Theatre, South Indian Film Chamber Preview Theatre and Inox Multiplex. The festival ended with success for Vasanthabalan's Angaadi Theru in the Best Film Category for Tamil films.[23]
20 Despite passing with a "U" certificate from the Censor Board, producer Udhayanidhi Stalin opted to remove a controversial poem, "Kannodu Kan Kallanthal (Kamal Kavithai)" written by Kamal Haasan in his own film, Manmadan Ambu. The poem, recited by Kamal Haasan and -Trisha Krishnan, had come under criticism from the Hindu Makkal Katchi due to lines about a woman's desire and for references to Hindu deities like Aranganathar and Sri Varalakshmi. [24]
