Smilebit was a research and development division within Sega.

Previously it was a development division being split into Team Aquila, G9 Team (responsible for Sport games) and Team Andromeda (Panzer Dragoon). With Smilebit, all of these groups were brought together under one banner.

In July 1 of 2004 all of Sega's 2nd party studios, AM2, Sonic Team, Sega WOW, Hitmaker, Amusement Vision and Smilebit were integrated into Sega again.
