Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (also known as University of Technology, Malaysia, UTM) is the oldest public engineering and technological university in Malaysia. The university specialises in technical studies, with separate faculties for Education, Pure Sciences, Management, and Human Resources Development. It is the country's major source of graduate engineers and similar professionals. Alumni of UTM have been instrumental in developing sectors related to engineering and technology in Malaysia.
With over 20,000 students on campus, more than 25% of them are postgraduates. Since the 1990s, the number of foreign students, particularly from neighbouring Asian countries, the Middle East, and Africa, has been increasing, especially in postgraduate programs. UTM graduates have gone on to many academic and professional institutions across the world.

[edit] History
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is the oldest premier higher learning institution in Malaysia specializing in engineering and technology. Its inception was in 1904. The existence of UTM is synonymous with Malaysia’s growth and progress in technological and infrastructure development, proven by its track record as the provider of almost two-thirds of the country’s workforce in engineering- and technology-related profession. In fact, the alumni of UTM comprise outstanding and distinguished personalities who have played a pivotal role in contributing toward the development of the country.
In the early 1900s, the Malaysian Public Works Department opened a Technical School at Brickfields Drive (now known as Jalan Tun Sambanthan), Kuala Lumpur, to train technical staff for public works and land surveying. In 1930, the Kuala Lumpur Technical School was further expanded into a new site in High Street, presently known as Jalan Bandar.
With the advent of World War II, a suggestion for further development was implemented in 1946, and the institution became known as Technical College, Kuala Lumpur. The Technical College then offered three-year diploma courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Architecture, Town and Country Planning, Land Surveying and Quantity Surveying. The construction of the new Technical College at Gurney Drive (now known as Jalan Semarak), Kuala Lumpur, began in 1951. It became fully operational in March 1955. In 1960, a milestone was reached when engineering courses at degree level were offered. Students pursuing the courses had to sit for professional examinations conducted by the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, United Kingdom. The rate of success was very encouraging, and led to further development.
Another milestone was reached in 1967 when the Planning Committee for Higher Learning decided to upgrade the Technical College to the level of institution of technology with university status from 1969 onward. On 14 March 1972 the decision was implemented with the establishment of Institut Teknologi Kebangsaan (National Institute of Technology) under Section 6(1) of the University and University College Act, 1971. On 1 April 1975, the journey from school to university was completed when the institution finally became "Universiti Teknologi Malaysia" (UTM).
UTM's regional and international academic collaborations makes it a hub of visiting academics, researchers and students from over five continents. Popular local industrial collaborations include Intel, Altera, and Proton[3]. UTM is one of the few public universities in Malaysia that attained research university status, opening up a lot of avenue for research and industrial collaboration through government research grants. On January 8, 2012, the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education declared UTM to be the first Malaysian university to attain full autonomy from the government. This allows the university to select the best of the regional students, as well as handle most of the management internally for a more efficient administration.
[edit] Campuses
UTM has two campuses. The main campus is in Skudai, and it was the first university in the state of Johor. It has an area of 1222 hectares (campus map), and is the second largest public university after Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). It is about 20 km north of the state capital, Johor Bahru, and is relatively close to the Sultan Ismail Airport, Senai.
The branch campus is situated in Jalan Semarak within Kuala Lumpur, with an area of 18 hectares. The branch campus accommodates diploma students, part-time students (also known as the SPACE program), and foreign students taking business courses.
[edit] General
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia is located in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, and Johor Bahru, the southern city in Iskandar Malaysia, in the south of Peninsular Malaysia.
The university has many general facilities available for staff and students alike. This includes a very large library (known as Perpustakaan Sultanah Zanariah)[4] with online facilities, free wireless internet connectivity throughout campus, free bus services, as well as a variety of local and international restaurants on campus. The university also provides handicap-friendly facilities and as well as a variety of support services.
UTM strives to be a world class university, and is listed favorably by many university ranking websites. The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities places UTM in the fourth place in the South East Asia Region, and the top in Malaysia.[5] It placed 190 in the "Engineering & IT Universities" category among other world ranked universities in 2011, an improvement from 240 in the previous year[6]. UTM aims to achieve the status of a global university and rank among 50 of the world's best universities by 2020[7].
UTM has embarked on initiatives to boost its credentials and enhance its visibility in the international arena. Another initiative is the formation of the Iskandar Malaysia Academic Partnership (IMAP) resulting from the Inaugural UTM University Presidents Forum.
[edit] Residential colleges (Skudai Campus)
UTM has many on campus hostel blocks that provide accommodation for students. Students of different races in Malaysia stay in these hostels, including international students. These hostels blocks are grouped into units known as colleges, for simplifying administration. Each College has three or more hostel blocks under their administration. Currently UTM has 13 colleges, which can sufficiently accommodate 17,500 students. Among the facilities provided at each residential college are a cafeteria, a multipurpose hall, a Muslim prayer room, tennis courts, an internet and computer center, a convenience store and a common room[8].
