Charlie Hebdo issue No. 1178[edit]

Created by Iselilja (talk). Self nominated at 23:47, 20 January 2015 (UTC).

  • Mentioning numbers in the hook would draw more interest. Yoninah (talk) 22:44, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
  • No, it wouldn't. People would click through to see the number. On the other hand, you don't really need to have "issue" and "number" in the hook and it's pithier shortened either way. [Also, minor grammar edit.] — LlywelynII 01:26, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Sorry, I wasn't clear. I didn't mean issue number. I meant print run. This factoid is buried in the article and something about it being the biggest print run in French history should be added to the lead. Something like:
  • ALT1: ... that the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo increased its usual print run from 60,000 copies to 7 million in the wake of the shooting of 11 members of its staff? Yoninah (talk) 01:35, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
  • No, sorry I wasn't clear:
Comment: My own opinion is, no, we should not include the specific publication numbers. For most readers, they will cause eye-glazing instead of interest and, for people wanting that detail, those people will click the hook anyway, which is what we're trying to accomplish.
Comment: Separately, the current article name was a bad translation/compromise after they moved the page from Survivors' Issue. It doesn't actually need "issue" and "no." It's better if you choose one. — LlywelynII 01:27, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Looking at the issue itself, the formatting is:
ALT2: ... that Charlie Hebdo №1178 had the highest print run in the history of the French press?

  • I don't know if "№" is specifically addressed anywhere, but in general, the MOS advises against using such specialized characters. (Some of the specific examples I know about are at MOS:MATH#Fractions and MOS:PUNCT.) MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 22:38, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
Mandarax Please feel free to move the article to an appropriate title. It has been moved several times already; I haven't paid so much attention to that. (I am going to update/expand this article a bit tomorrow. The last print run number I have is 7,950,000. They cancelled a couple of ordinary issues due to the tragedy; so the situation is a bit special). Iselilja (talk) 23:51, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
The article doesn't currently use the character in either the title or in the article body. I was just talking about ALT2. (And, as I said, I'm not sure of the "official" position on the use of that character.) MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 01:11, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

New enough and long enough, Original hook is fine, agree that there is no need to mention the numbers in the hook. Article is neutral, presenting both good and bad reaction to the publication of that issue of the magazine. AGF on plagiarism, no problems with a couple of French language refs I checked. As to be expected, there is a reliance of French sources for this article. Mjroots (talk) 17:23, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

Indeed. Sorry for that. I have added QPQ, as well as three other contributors to the article. Iselilja (talk) 23:41, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, restoring Mjroots' tick. Fuebaey (talk) 02:43, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
