Richard Littlehailes[edit]

Created by Solomon7968 (talk). Self nominated at 13:15, 17 June 2013 (UTC).

  • Article is much too short. The prose is only slightly more than 1000 chars. The hook is missing a comma after 1936, and doesn't really make sense to me. I get the bit up to and including Woodrow Wilson, then I get lost.
Article is new enough, neutral, cites sources.
I'm concerned about some close paraphrasing:
Article: "...got his B.A. from Balliol College, Oxford and entered the Indian Educational Service in 1903."
Ramanujan (1995): "...with a B.A. from Balliol College, Oxford, entered the Indian Educational Service in 1903."
Article: "He later became Director of Public Instruction in Madras in 1919, and from 1927 to 1933 served as Educational Commissioner to the Government of India."
Whitehead (2003): "He eventually became DPI in Madras in 1919, and in 1927 Educational Commissioner to the Government of India."
A bit too close for comfort for mye taste.
Hook is short enough, but, as listed initially in the review, has issues that need to be fixed.
Nominator doesn't appear to have only two previous DYK credits, so no QPQ is required. Manxruler (talk) 15:40, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
Okay There are two alternate DYK hooks
  • Okay. Here's what needs to happen for this DYK nomination to pass successfully:
  1. (most importantly) At least 500 characters of prose text needs to be added to the article.
  2. The close paraphrasing issues needs to be resolved. Parts of the present text (identified above) is a little too close to the source texts.
  3. A good hook needs to be created. I think the original hook could work, if it's fixed. Right now it doesn't work, but I think that it has good potential. The alt hook about Littlehailes being the Vice chancellor of University of Madras from 1934 to 1937 is not as good as the original hook can be, if worked on.
All clear? Manxruler (talk) 19:10, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
All clear. Will try to fix within tomorrow. Solomon7968 19:21, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
Good. I'll check back in then. Manxruler (talk) 19:54, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
Just to update: Despite recent additions, the article's still too short, and several citations are missing. I've added citation needed tags where the citations should go. Manxruler (talk) 22:45, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
Agreed that the article is short but this is the *total* info on internet present. But the cn tags are redundant. I ref grouped one and the Radhakrishnan one probably does not needs citation (univerasally known). Solomon7968 22:57, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
Well, my count of the prose portion of the text only gives c. 1,260 characters, while at least 1,500 is needed. Block quotes are not included in the prose text. Are you absolutely sure you cannot expand further? It's just too short as is. Manxruler (talk) 23:10, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
I tried my best including asking on WP:RX but nobody has responded to it yet. I understand the requirements of DYK and will not mind if it is declined but it seems *impossible to expand the article furthur. Solomon7968 23:18, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
And it shouldn't be too hard to find a ref for the Radhakrishnan presidency. I would hardly call that a universally know fact, at all. Manxruler (talk) 23:13, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
It is of type of thing such as "give citation that Woodrow Wilson was president of United States". By universally known I mean that only primary source are possible here given the extraordinary number of secondary source. Solomon7968 23:18, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
Just added a reference though the Radhakrishnan article has far lower reference than I expected. I thought at least it will be more than 100. Solomon7968 23:26, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
Yes, well, the Radhakrishnan article is in far from a perfect condition. Thanks for providing the ref. Manxruler (talk) 23:31, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
  • The article remains too short for DYK at 1260 prose characters, and there have been no edits to it since the added reference mentioned above approximately two weeks ago. As the nominator indicated that "it seems impossible to expand the article further", I think it's time to close the nomination as unsuccessful. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:22, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
