There is currently no consensus on where to place this template in an article but above the reference list is probably the most acceptable.

The simplest way to add this template to an article is to copy and paste {{ISBN|date=September 2014}}.

Usage

Use this to note that some or all books cited do not have their ISBNs included in the article.

WP:CITE does not require that ISBNs be added. This template should therefore not be restored over objections. An ISBN directs the reader to just one edition of a book, and it may not be the edition that was used as a source. There is therefore a risk that, if an ISBN is added at a later date, it will not match the page numbers in the citation, or the content that the citation supports. If in doubt, check with the main author(s) of the article, or on the talk page, and as with all CITEVAR issues, defer to the citation system used by the first major contributor if no consensus can be reached.

Do not use this template to identify books that were never assigned ISBNs by their publishers. Most books published before 1974 do not have ISBNs, though editions of earlier books published after that date should have them.

Note that this template is not required for inserting an ISBN into an article; the Mediawiki software recognizes ISBNs automatically.

Entering ISBNs

This template is not for providing links for ISBNs.

Instead simply type ISBN before the number with a space but not a colon. Hyphens are not required, but are preferred if their proper placement is known (see Wikipedia:ISBN for links to find the correct dash placement).

In tables (or other applications) where the letters ISBN would be redundant the ISBNT template may be used instead.
