Purpose[edit]

The Moved discussion to and Moved discussion from tags are related to Resolved, but are meant to be placed at the top of sections on talk pages and other discussions, to indicate when a discussion has been moved elsewhere. It serves as a reminder for editors not to add any more to the discussion, except at its new location, unless strictly necessary.

Usage[edit]

Place the following under the topic heading on a talk page:

Moved from Talk:Archive: --JohnDoe 25 December 2014 04:30 (UTC)

The first parameter is the full page name of the old location and should include the name of the topic as well if it isn't identical in both places, in the form Namespace:Pagename#Topic.

The second parameter, |2= or |reason=, an additional comment explaining why the discussion was moved, and/or to sign so that others know who marked the thread as resolved, is optional, especially if a comment retained below the heading makes it clear who did the move and why. If used, it should fit on one line, and the explicit |2= or |reason= parameter name is necessary if there are any "=" characters in the message, for example if your raw signature contains the character, which is quite common. Example:

Moved from Talk:Article: Articles have been updated with 2007 data, and are now in sync. --JohnDoe 00:26, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

The corresponding would be placed under the topic heading of the discussion after it is pasted into its new location, usually with the same or a similar message, so that the reasons for the move are clear on both ends.

If the target page is automatically archived and discussion is substantially old, the third parameter may be used to note the date of latest comment in discussion. The contents of this parameter will not be displayed, but it will be the date that archiving bot will parse when determining the age of discussion.

Example[edit]

At Talk:Turtle:

Chelonia
Chelonia currently redirects to Turtle, but Chelonia is the monotypic genus containing
the Green Sea Turtle.
Shouldn't it be Chelonian-->Turtle, and Chelonia-->Green Sea Turtle?

At Wikipedia:Help_desk/Archives/2014 December 25:

Question about turtles
Chelonia currently redirects to Turtle, but Chelonia is the monotypic genus containing
the Green Sea Turtle.
Shouldn't it be Chelonian-->Turtle, and Chelonia-->Green Sea Turtle?

:The Help Desk is for questions about using Wikipedia; this discussion really belongs
on Talk:Turtle. --AnotherUser789 14 July 2005 05:26 (UTC)
::I moved it. ~~~~
