Purpose

Moved discussion to and Moved discussion from tag are related to Resolved, but are meant to be placed at the top of sections on talk pages and other discussions, to indicate when a discussion has been moved elsewhere. It serves as a reminder for editors not to add any more to the discussion, except at its new location, unless strictly necessary.

Usage

Place the following under the topic heading on a talk page:

Moved to Talk:Archive: --JohnDoe 10 July 2014 01:32 (UTC)

You can also use the shortcut mdt.

The first parameter is the full page name of the new location and should include the name of the topic as well if it isn't identical in both places, in the form Namespace:Pagename#Topic.

The second parameter, an additional comment explaining why the discussion was moved, and/or to sign so that others know who marked the thread as resolved, is optional, especially if a comment retained below the heading makes it clear who did the move and why. If used, it should fit on one line, and the explicit |2= is necessary if there are any "=" characters in the message, for example if your raw signature contains the character, which is quite common. Example:

Moved to Talk:Article: Articles have been updated with 2007 data, and are now in sync. --JohnDoe 00:26, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

The corresponding would be placed under the topic heading of the discussion after it is pasted into its new location, usually with the same or a similar message, so that the reasons for the move are clear on both ends.

Example

At Wikipedia:Help_desk/Archives/2014 July 10:

Question about turtles
Chelonia currently redirects to Turtle, but Chelonia is the monotypic genus
containing the Green Sea Turtle.
Shouldn't it be Chelonian-->Turtle, and Chelonia-->Green Sea Turtle?

:The Help Desk is for questions about using Wikipedia; this discussion really belongs on
Talk:Turtle. AnotherUser789 14 July 2005 05:26 (UTC)
::I moved it. ~~~~

At Talk:Turtle:

Chelonia
Chelonia currently redirects to Turtle, but Chelonia is the monotypic genus containing
the Green Sea Turtle.
Shouldn't it be Chelonian-->Turtle, and Chelonia-->Green Sea Turtle?
