[edit] Usage
The {{WikiProject Linguistics}} project banner template should be added (not substituted) to the talk page of every article within the scope of WikiProject Linguistics. While the template does not require any additional parameters, it has a number of optional ones that add various extra features to the banner.
For quickly adding this banner to talk pages, use the quick syntax:
{{WikiProject Linguistics
|class= <!-- FA, A, GA, B, C, Start, Stub, FL, List, NA -->
}}
If you want the full range of options, the syntax is as follows:
{{WikiProject Linguistics
|small=
|importance= <!-- Top, High, Mid, Low, NA -->
|class= <!-- FA, A, GA, B, C, Start, Stub, FL, List, NA -->
|maindykdate=
|needs-image=
|attention=
<!-- Task forces -->
|applied=
|applied-importance= <!-- Top, High, Mid, Low, NA -->
|etymology=
|etymology-section=
|etymology-section-class= <!-- good, incomplete, missing -->
|etymology-importance= <!-- Top, High, Mid, Low, NA -->
|phonetics=
|phonetics-importance= <!-- Top, High, Mid, Low, NA -->
|sfl=
|sfl-importance= <!-- Top, High, Mid, Low, NA -->
|theoretical=
|theoretical-importance= <!-- Top, High, Mid, Low, NA -->
}}
To avoid needlessly cluttering up talk pages, it is usually appropriate to remove any unused parameters from the template.
[edit] General parameters
- small – "yes" if the banner should be rendered in its miniature size; this should be used sparingly and only on crowded talk pages for the time being.
- importance – a measure of the article's importance to WikiProject Linguistics as a whole, according to this scale. Values can be "Top", "High", "Mid", "Low", or "NA".
- class – a rating of the article's quality, chosen from this assessment scale. Values can be "FA", "A", "GA", "B", "C", "Start", "Stub", "FL", "List", or "NA". Comments that explain the rating may be added by clicking on the link within the template; other comments and questions belong on the Talk page of the article itself.
- auto – this is used by WikiProject-tagging bots to indicate that the "class" parameter has been filled in automatically. Please delete this parameter if making a manual assessment.
- maindykdate – the date the article appeared in "Did You Know?" on the Main Page, if applicable.
- needs-image – "yes" if the article would benefit from having more images
- attention – "yes" if the article requires immediate attention. If this is specified, the article will be listed in Category:Linguistics articles needing attention.
[edit] Task-force-specific parameters
- applied – "yes" if the article is supported by the Applied Linguistics Task Force.

- etymology-section – "yes" if the Etymology Task Force is concerned with just one section (the etymology section), rather than the whole article.
- This parameter only works if the
|etymology=parameter is specified as well.
- This parameter only works if the
- etymology-section-class (or etymology-class) – this parameter is used to rate the quality of the article's etymology section. Values can be "good", "incomplete", or "missing".
- This parameter only works if the
|etymology=and|etymology-section=parameters are specified as well. - If this parameter is set to "good", "incomplete", or "missing" then the main
|class=parameter will be set to "NA", to avoid confusing the quality of the etymology section with the quality of the article overall. This can be overridden by specifying the|class=parameter separately. - If the
|etymology-section=parameter is specified without|etymology-section-class=, or if|etymology-section-class=is anything other than "good", "incomplete", or "missing", then the etymology section will be marked as "unassessed".
- This parameter only works if the
- phonetics – "yes" if the article is supported by the Phonetics Task Force.
- phonetics-importance – a measure of the article's importance to the Phonetics Task Force. Values can be "Top", "High", "Mid", "Low", or "NA".

- theoretical-importance – a measure of the article's importance to the Theoretical Linguistics Task Force. Values can be "Top", "High", "Mid", "Low", or "NA".
