[edit] "Saint" Counties
If you're inquiring about a county that should be "St." instead of "Saint" or some other variable that helps make the infobox more accurate, please contact my talk page. Timneu22 23:52, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Motto or Slogan
I think I would be a good idea to add a new section to the Infobox stating county's slogan or motto. For example, Miami-Dade County, Florida's slogan is Delivering Excellence Every Day It would be nice to put it in the Infobox. iDosh! talk? 18:16, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not sold on this one yet. This template was in use for a long time before someone said, "we need a county flag parameter". This one made sense, as many counties probably have a flag. Do alot of counties really have a motto? Is this common? Timneu22 (talk) 13:29, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Seal Size
I have noticed that the size of the seal in these info boxes are proportionally small. In particular, the seal in Maui County, Hawaii caught my eye when I wasn't able to read the text in seal when it was in the box. Then I confirmed my suspicions in Orange County, California. In both cases, the source image is larger. Is there anyway to change this? Thanks! --travisthurston+ 17:12, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Very nice! I had just proposed the same concept over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject U.S. counties#Adding congressional districts to county infoboxes, but I'm glad to see the work's already been done ;). I do have one question, though: How do you add more than 3 congressional districts to a county's infobox? I was trying to do, for example, Los Angeles County, California, which has 18. Thanks for any help anyone might provide! Qqqqqq (talk) 01:24, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
- I'll get the code created soon.... the districts1-3 bit needs a tweak anyway. Comment on my talk page if I haven't done anything within 48 hours. Tompw (talk) (review) 22:12, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
- Wonderful—thank you! Also, would it be possible to link the row label "Congressional district/s" to the article on the state's congressional districts, which are called State's congressional districts (e.g. Georgia's congressional districts)? Qqqqqq (talk) 22:21, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

{{Editprotected}} Edit request please replace the chunk of code shown above with the chunk of code shown below. - I don't really understand what's going on with regard to these protected templates and such. Is it possible to add the code for districts 4 through 18 to the template? Qqqqqq (talk) 08:24, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Free labels
I want to add the motto of the City and County of Honolulu to that county/city's infobox, but I need some free labels. Does anyone wish to add a free label code in the infobox so I can add the motto and the mayor to the infobox? WhisperToMe (talk) 00:32, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
This is the code I want to add:
- County skyline: <td colspan="2" style="text-align: center; padding: 0.7em 0.8em 0.7em 0.8em;;"> [[Image:{{{image_skyline|}}}|{{#if:{{{imagesize|}}}|{{{imagesize}}}|250px}}|none|{{{image_caption|Skyline of {{#if:{{{name|}}}|{{{name}}}|{{{official_name}}}}}}}}]]{{#if:{{{image_caption|}}}|<small>{{{image_caption|}}}</small>}} </td>
- County motto: <!-- ***** Motto ***** --> {{#if:{{{motto|}}}| <tr class="mergedrow"> <td colspan="2" align="center">[[Motto]]: {{{motto|}}}</td> </tr>
This is so I can have City and County of Honolulu use the county template but have city-like features as well. WhisperToMe (talk) 07:17, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- Due to a lack of response I decided to add the parameters. WhisperToMe (talk) 21:45, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

The infobox implementation only allows a figure of the population density per square kilometre. I understand the reason for not entering the density per square mile as well; instead, it is automatically calculated. However, on counties with low population densities, the default behaviour of rounding the calculated value of pop/sq mi to the nearest integer results in a value of zero for this statistic (refer to Kenedy County, Texas.) Is there a way that will allow at least two significant figures in the calculated value?
Alternately, the infobox already contains entry for population and land area. How about just calculating these density figures automatically, for both sq mi and sq km, and have the code for the infobox to ignore any manual entry for either figure?
KJBurns (talk) 18:09, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Disabled the editprotected request for a moment. The <nowiki> mess above it too hard to understand. Can you please put any changes into the template sandbox and then re-enable the editprotected request(s)? I'd be happy to sync any changes, then. :-) Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 22:59, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Need a bot for cleanup
I think we need a bot to do some cleanup. According to this, the following pages link to these non-existent census years:
United States Census, 2005 (redirect page) (links) United States Census, 2006 (redirect page) (links) United States Census, 2007 (redirect page) (links) United States Census, 2008 (redirect page) (links) United States Census, 2009 (redirect page) (links) United States Census, 2004 (redirect page) (links) United States Census, 2002 (redirect page) (links)
So a bot should do this:
- Find any page that has the "census yr" parameter that is not divisble by 10 (i.e., one of the links above, and others)
- Switch that parameter name (not value) to "census estimate yr"
- If all the redirects listed above (and others) have zero pages pointing to them, delete the redirects.
From what I could tell, the redirects were all from people using the county templates incorrectly. Timneu22 (talk) 12:10, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Category: Missing U.S. County Infobox
Is there a Category indicating counties that are missing the infobox? This might help in tagging county articles for cleanup later. -- Ichabod (talk) 00:03, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
- I don't know of one, but at some point (years ago) I remember thinking that 100% of them had this infobox. A bot could be requested to find anything without one. Timneu22 (talk) 11:33, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Since the current layout, colors, font size, and appearance of Template:Infobox U.S. state is similar to Template:Infobox settlement, I would also prefer that Template:Infobox U.S. County also look sort of similar to those two. To me, it seems out of place that, for example, the appearance and colors of the infobox for Cook County, Illinois look very different than those of either Illinois or Chicago. I mean, shouldn't the infoboxes of all these U.S. government levels and divisions all look sort of alike? Zzyzx11 (talk) 07:07, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
- Here's a hypothetical example on the right: Zzyzx11 (talk) 07:24, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
- Any objections? I probably won't get around to working on the changes until late December 2009. So it's the time to speak up now (although I can't see any reasonable argument against being consistent since the current look of Template:Infobox U.S. state and Template:Infobox settlement has been around for months now). - Thanks but... could you re-add the "includeonly" tags (or explain why they were removed; maybe it is a policy)? By removing those, the template page now looks worse, and links to the image that will never exist: Map_of_USA_ERROR,_wrong_state_name._looking_for_Map_of_USA_XX.svg_where_XX_is_the_two-letter_abbreviation_of_the_state. Timneu22 (talk) 22:15, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
- I can re-add them, but it is often helpful for an editor to get an idea of what the template does just by looking at it. I agree it looks ugly with the redlink - could I just hide that image or do you want the whole lot hidden? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:40, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
- I'd say to hide the whole thing, like it used to. If you really want to show it, you could include the "sample" subpage (there's already a link to it", but that may not even be necessary. I'm pretty sure that when people use this template, they know what it will look like. Further, I think that around 99% of the counties are using this already, so it's not going to be added too much in the future. Showing it in the template namespace isn't helpful in this case. Timneu22 (talk) 10:25, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Central Time
Please change
- Central = [[Central Time Zone (Americas)|Central]]
- Central = Central
to
- Central = [[Central Time Zone (North America)|Central]]
- Central = Central
In North America UTC−06 has daylight change from March to November. In South America either there is no time change or it is from October to March. Therefore, there is not such a thing as "Central time in the Americas", unless you mean the static time zone UTC−06. Esmito (talk) 19:38, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
- Request seems correct... need to use {{editprotected}} to call attention to it. I added this tag. — Timneu22 · talk 20:01, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

- I see. Fair enough. — Timneu22 · talk 20:33, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
- Then why is there an article called UTC−06? Please see Talk:Central_Time_Zone_(Americas)#Name_change. I think that the users of this template want something additional to UTC−06. The name Central Time Zone (Americas) requires that the article be merged with UTC−06. It's either the merge or the name change. Esmito (talk) 22:44, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
- Esmito, this is not the place to argue. The problems aren't with this template but rather with those other articles. Sort out those issues before complaining here. (removing editprotected) — Timneu22 · talk 00:38, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
- Timneu22, Americans think that Central Time applies to all of the Americas, forgetting that in the Southern Hemisphere daylight change is in the opposite months. The main users of Central Time Zone (Americas) are here in this template: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:WhatLinksHere/Central_Time_Zone_%28Americas%29&limit=500 If Central Time Zone (Americas) were merged to UTC−06 then the articles most affected would be the users of this template Esmito (talk) 04:06, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

I would prefer that the flag, county logo, and the ex image also be near the top of the infobox like {{infobox settlement}}. Any objections? Zzyzx11 (talk) 17:21, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
- And I might do a few more cosmetic changes to follow up on my proposals on #Change layout and appearance for consistency to make this more consistent with other infoboxes. Thanks. Zzyzx11 (talk) 18:07, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
[edit] Linking of common units
{{editprotect}} This template is causing common units such as square mile and square kilometre to be linked. This seems to me to be excessive. wp:link says:
- "Units of measurement which are common only in some parts of the English-speaking world need not be linked if they are accompanied by a conversion to units common in the rest of it, as in 18 °C (64 °F), as almost all readers of the English Wikipedia would be able to understand at least one of the two measures."
Please can we modify the template so that square mile and km are not linked? Regards Lightmouse (talk) 14:15, 30 August 2010 (UTC)
- Could I ask you to make the requested changes to Template:Infobox U.S. county/sandbox and re-enable the request? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:51, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I've updated the sandbox as requested. Lightmouse (talk) 11:16, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Update to link needed
{{edit protected}} The link to the Central Time Zone needs to be changed. Please see the corrected version in the sandbox: [1] Thanks, --Funandtrvl (talk) 22:43, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
- Normally, we do not "fix" links to redirects that are not broken, especially on a template that is protected under "high-risk". Any change may not be seen on those thousands of article that use this template for several hours or days, due to the way the software caches articles (See Wikipedia:Purge#How it works). And since it is not a visible change on the page, I do not see a benefit. Zzyzx11 (talk) 14:42, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
[edit] Unlinking population and area
{{editprotected}} There's no value in linking the headings Population and Area - they're just ordinary dictionary words. Can they be unlinked please, per WP:OVERLINK? Colonies Chris (talk) 22:16, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
- Per code in the sandbox. Colonies Chris (talk) 10:24, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Census Footnotes
Please add a "census_footnotes" field similar to how Template:Infobox settlement does it with its "population_footnotes" field, so we can easily add a reference. • Sbmeirow • Talk • 10:31, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Alternate Infobox
Vermont is unique (relatively, if not absolutely) among US states in that it does not use the term county seat to identify that municipality which is the administrative center for that county. In fact, there is no county government in Vermont to speak of, except for a Superior Court and the Sheriff. Be that as it may, we call it shire town.
Thus, the use of the U.S. Counties infobox on Vermont Counties pages, forcing the use of the term "seat," is downright inaccurate.
How does one go about creating an infobox reflecting the accurate term? A minimum of effort is necessary: it can be a direct copy of the U.S. Counties infobox with just that term changed. --Mfwills (talk) 00:09, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
- I made a change to the template so if the value of "state" is "Vermont", it will display "Shire Town" instead. Zzyzx11 (talk) 00:55, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Geocoordinates: No seconds?
Why doesn't this template allow placement of seconds in the coordinates? We have degrees and minutes, but no seconds. I realize that this is small details, but it could be important. I'm not going to even pretend that I know how to add seconds to the template, so would someone familiar with this kind of stuff be able to add it, and then update the documentation? Thanks. SchuminWeb (Talk) 04:18, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
- IIRC, the decision to omit the seconds was based on WP:OPCOORD: "Generally, the larger the object being mapped, the less precise the coordinates should be". Previous consensus was that such small detail was not needed for the mapping of counties. Zzyzx11 (talk) 04:32, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
