Template talk:CIA World Factbook link

Shouldn't the _external_ link come first, like {imdb}, {gutenberg}, etc.?[edit]

Something like:

[https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/COUNTRY_CODE.html COUNTRY] entry from the [[CIA World Factbook]]

Since it is generally used in the External links sections like those other External link templates. 76.22.4.86 01:05, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Notes on codes[edit]

The CIA builds the Factbook around the FIPS 10-4 two letter codes; a list of these codes can found at List of FIPS country codes. However, there are a few codes used in the Factbook not at the above link. They are:

  • xx - World
  • xq - Arctic Ocean
  • zh - Atlantic Ocean
  • xo - Indian Ocean
  • kv - Kosovo
  • zn - Pacific Ocean
  • oo - Southern Ocean
  • um - United States Pacific Island Wildlife Refuges
  • ee - European Union

When using these codes on this page or in the link, the codes have to be lowercase or you will get a 404 error.

I hope this helps. - Thanks, Hoshie 13:05, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

This template would much more useful if it dispensed with the codes. They're not common knowledge. SamEV (talk) 04:15, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Wikify[edit]

{{editprotected}} Please wikify The World Factbook in the generated code (similar to CongLinks). Flatterworld (talk) 05:02, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Yes check.svg Done. Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 01:56, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Documentation request[edit]

{{editprotected}}

Dear admins:

Can someone please add a {{Documentation}} tag to this template, to create an editable documentation page? I will write the documentation myself, it shouldn't take long. Also, move the categories onto the page. Thanks. --Eastlaw talk ⁄ contribs 23:54, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Done. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:27, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Done. --- RockMFR 21:31, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

They've switched back to lower case... So please revert the last change. Thanks, Nevuer (talk) 11:57, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

{{editprotected}} What Nevuer said above, country codes are lower case again so change:

  • geos/{{anchorencode:{{uc:{{{1|}}}}}}}.html back to geos/{{anchorencode:{{{1|}}}}}.html

Done, I think. Not watching this page, so hit me up on usertalk if there's an issue. Ciao,  Skomorokh  18:35, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

accessdate[edit]

Would adding accessdate field be appropriate? When used as a source it comes handy. --Muhandes (talk) 11:13, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
