[edit] misspelled parameters

The longitude parameters (LongtitudeDegrees, LongtitudeMinutes, LongtitudeSeconds, LongtitudeDegrees1, LongtitudeMinutes1, and LongtitudeSeconds1) are all misspelled. --Stepheng3 (talk) 20:06, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Template problem

There is a small red dot (bullet icon?) and text overlaying "Country" just below the map coordinates, and it doesn't belong there. I'm not sure how to fix it, though. Lambtron (talk) 20:39, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

It looks wrong on this page, but on the actual article page it looks fine (see Naha). It's a position marker to mark the city on the map. Moberg (talk) 11:45, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
As the documentation says, locations in Okinawa and Ōshima must use LatitudeDegrees1, LatitudeMinutes1, LatitudeSeconds1, LongtitudeDegrees1, LongtitudeMinutes1, and LongtitudeSeconds1 in place of LatitudeDegrees, LatitudeMinutes, LatitudeSeconds, LongtitudeDegrees, LongtitudeMinutes, and LongtitudeSeconds. That's why the infobox at Naha, Okinawa works great while the one on this page has the dot in the wrong place. This is a horrible kludge and makes me want to get rid of this infobox and use {{Infobox settlement}} in its place.--Stepheng3 (talk) 17:53, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
Good idea - why don't we just do that? Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 21:33, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
I see this has been proposed before and there were no objections. If it's good enough for Tokyo it should work for just about any Japanese city. I'll look into initiating a conversion. --Stepheng3 (talk) 22:39, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
I've set up a conversion template in Template:Infobox City Japan/sandbox and some testcases in Template:Infobox City Japan/testcases. I've also used {{subst:Infobox City Japan/sandbox}} to convert Kobe and Naha, Okinawa. If there are no objections, I will convert a few more articles and eventually take the sandbox version live. --Stepheng3 (talk) 01:17, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
Could someone please explain exactly what this "kludge" is? I understand that the map of Japan used in the infobox is a bit odd because it has Okinawa in a location where it doesn't actually exist due to it being so far southwest of the rest of Japan. However, I don't see what the proposed infobox does differently which would make it work. No one has bothered to explain this yet (other than to call it a "kludge", which is less than useless), so I have nothing on which to base an opinion. Thanks. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 05:04, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
{{Infobox settlement}} allows an editor to specify the pushpin_map directly, using a documented parameter. While this could possibly be implemented in {{Infobox City Japan}} as well, that would leave a number of other flaws in the template, such as the fact that several of the other parameter-names are misspelled.
{{Infobox City Japan}} appears to be a fork of {{Infobox settlement}}. This means that enhancements and fixes to {{Infobox settlement}} (which has more features and better support) may fail to reach {{Infobox City Japan}}. Until recently, {{Infobox City Japan}} apparently lacked testcases. It makes sense to phase out the weaker template in favor of the one that has greater functionality, is better supported, and gets tested more carefully. --Stepheng3 (talk) 20:51, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. As long as changing it doesn't break anything, I'm fine with updating it to that. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 21:13, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
I'm aware that this is a heavily-used template and will take care not to break things. Testing is underway, and I am still tweaking the sandbox version.--Stepheng3 (talk) 21:26, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
Looks like I removed the obviously broken version which was previously here to refer to. It's in the archive now. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 21:27, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

In my testing, I came across a bug related to the kludge. When LatitudeMinutes1 is used (to specify a location in Okinawa via the kludge) the live version of {{Infobox City Japan}} fails to display any Coordinates, Country, Region, or Prefecture. Again, probably fixable, but I think the best long-term solution is to switch to {{Infobox settlement}} or base {{Infobox City Japan}} thereupon. --Stepheng3 (talk) 22:01, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

I believe the sandbox version is almost ready to go live. This is a new implementation of the infobox (based on {{Infobox settlement}}) and involves some changes to the appearance of the infobox. You can compare the two versions at the testcases page. If there are concerns, I'd appreciate hearing about them as soon as possible. --Stepheng3 (talk) 04:35, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
The new version is live. I'll try to respond quickly to issues that crop up. Feel free to revert if there are major problems. --Stepheng3 (talk) 01:54, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
Cool. Will you update the documentation page, to reflect your changes. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 02:28, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
My changes should not alter any parameters of the infobox, but I'll glance over the documentation page and correct any issues I see. --Stepheng3 (talk) 02:59, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
I was mostly concerned about the "LatitudeDegrees1" series of parameters because I thought your changes got rid of the need for those. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 07:17, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
I didn't change the interface because that would've broken existing articles. Going forward, I would recommend that editors use {{Infobox settlement}} which allows the pushpin map to be specified directly. Those accustomed to the {{Infobox City Japan}} interface can fill out the infobox and then subst it using {{subst:Infobox City Japan|subst=subst:|...}} which will perform the conversion to {{Infobox settlement}}. --Stepheng3 (talk) 20:24, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
