[edit] Portal parameter
According to the project banner, the portal parameter should refer to some sub-page entry of the queue. Why are we to write just "portal=yes" to it? Shouldn't we mention the relevant subpage as well? — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 16:52, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
- I was not sure how the portal pages were organized. So just linked it to general pages. Please provide an example and I can update the template accordingly. - Ganeshk (talk) 17:05, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
- Have a look at Selected content summary page that I created for the Selected articles on Portal:India. It links to the summary of all the articles under WP:PINSA. A convenient way to find when an article was last featured/will be featured is to see the last parameter in the bracket, which is the last date of featuring. In fact, this also provides a convenient way to find out all the days in which the given article came on the portal page: just click "what links here" from the summary page of any article. The trouble is almost all articles have been once featured, the exception being for those selected very recently or those for whom a working summary is absent. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 17:19, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Removing redundant templates
I have identified the following templates that have become redundant after the addition of WP India:
- WikiProject Indian cities
- WikiProject Indian states
- WikiProject Indian districts
- WikiProject Politics of India
- Wikiproject History of India
- Old India COTW
We can also deprecate the Indian portal related templates if we are able to integrate the infomation present in it with this template.
Is it okay to remove the above mentioned templates while adding the WP India template? — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 07:08, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
- I had done it here. I feel the same. Too many templates make the talk page cluttered. The new template mentions them anyway. - Ganeshk (talk) 16:15, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
- There might be a problem. For example, WikiProject Indian cities prescribes guidelines (MoS, etc.) for the article. Replacing the template would make the guidelines virtually inaccessible to new users. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 16:29, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Addition of other Wikiprojects in the templates
I have added a couple of other Wikiprojects in the template. They are "Wikiproject Indian cinema" and "Wikiproject History of India". I wanted to know whether we should add all India related Wikiprojects to the template. What about those that are closely related but not completely related (like Wikiproject Hinduism)? — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 06:01, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Usage of portal parameter
Why does the portal paramater has to be used in conjuction with "class=FA" only. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 06:01, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
- It does not have to to be used only with FA. It can be used by itself. Most FAs do get posted on the portal. So you see them all tagged. - Ganeshk (talk) 23:31, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
- I fixed the code so that it does not look for FA. Thanks for pointing that out. - Ganeshk (talk) 00:51, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Reg: Assessment
(copied from User_talk:Ganeshk) Hi Ganesh,
Even as I was assessing the articles, I got into a dilemma. I thought it would be great to categorise the assessed articles by month (say, Categories: India Articles Quality Assessed in Oct 2006), so that we can go back to that category sometime later (may be three months) and reassess the article again.
I wanted to include a date stamp as well in the assessment section of the WP India Template, saying This article was rated -Class according to assessment criteria on so-and-so date.
I tinkered around with the WP India template to do both these tasks, i.e., categorising, and time-stamping. It should be small add-on only, yet, I wasn't sure about the naming conventions for the parameters expected in the Template, as well as how a change in the template will affect the current usage.
Could you help me fix them into the WP India template?? It would help very much in systematic assessment and re-assessment. Cheers -- Chez (Discuss / Email) • 22:50, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
- That's a nice idea. I have not seen any other projects do that. Let me work on it and come up with a prototype. I will post here. -- Ganeshk (talk) 23:22, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Chez, I am ready with a prototype. Let me know if it's good. The template adds articles to the category, .
Usage:

Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:35, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
- It is really good. Please implement it yourself. Cheers -- Chez (Discuss / Email) • 05:52, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Peer review
There is a slight error in the template. When the parameter "peer-review=yes" is added to the template the red link that it generates is of the form request has been made. The colon shouldn't be there. I think this line - A request has been made - in the template coding is to blame. Can someone fix it? - Aksi_great (talk) 20:04, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Blank lines at top
This template produces blank lines above it. You can see this at the top of this page (removing the blank line between templates does not remove the space), and it is somewhat unappealing. Another editor referred to the "unsightly space" in Talk:History of saffron. This space can be removed by combining some lines early in the template. If the beginning of the template, currently

[edit] Nesting fix
Replace the contents of this template with the sandboxed version at User:Disavian/Sandbox/WP India. The change is that most nested templates tell you the article class while they are nested; currently, this template does not. For a demonstration of the change, see User talk:Disavian/Sandbox/WP India. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 05:06, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Tricolor.png
editprotected I've created Image:Tricolor.svg to replace Image:Tricolor.png. And seriously? a WikiProject Template totally disabled from editing by established users? - I changed the images. The protection is more or less standard for templates that are included in a lot of pages, but you could make an argument at WP:RFPP if you would like it to be unprotected. - It's in the template code but commented out. Was it removed for a reason? Gimmetrow 15:38, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- I don't know, but many other WikiProject templates give a link to the relevant associated portal in the WikiProject template. It helps to organize coordination between both the WikiProject and the Portal of the exact same topic.
- Here are some good examples of how this is used in conjunction with WikiProjects, and Portals, (both of which happen to be Wikipedia:Featured portals.) -- Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Psychology. Cirt (talk) 16:02, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

- After all the subproject texts, there is
- There are several India related portals apart from Portal:India (such as Portal:Kerala, Portal:West Bengal, Portal:Government of India, etc). As such, most of the India-related pages come under more than one portal. Hence we use certain portal specific tags (see Template:WP India#Usage) to link to these portals. See Talk:Kerala (click the [show] button) for an example of how this is implemented. This is probably the reason why a link to Portal:India is not given in the main body of the template.--thunderboltz(TALK) 14:57, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
- I had removed the portal link to save space on the box, was trying to hide as much as I can to make the box smaller. As Thunderboltz points out above, many portals (within India project scope) may apply for a particular topic. Displaying the root one alone is not helpful IMO. Other projects don't display them too. Would like to know your thoughts. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 04:35, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Assessments by date
Hi, this looks like the only project going around keep tracks of assessments by date. I really don't think that's particularly helpful as Category:India articles assessed by month is obviously missing a number of years. I would really suggest changing the template so that all the assessed article are in place, keeping the parameter and letting someone get a bot to figure it out fairly. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 04:02, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- It's purpose was to allow for revisiting the articles at a later time to revise the assessment. It is done manually by adding the "assess-date" parameter. Not sure why you want the template to be changed, since a bot could be written to fill the gaps. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 22:12, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

- I will give it a check to make sure all the functionality is available in the new template. Please give me some time. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 00:58, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
- Certainly, let me know if you have any questions. The class mask for the template is held at Template:WP India/class; should be self-explanatory. The only minor difference is the move from Unassessed-Class to Unassessed. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:39, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

- We do category intersection on the template that helps us build tables like this, Wikipedia:WikiProject_India/Assessment/Statistics. - Okay, wow, you like your categories! I've added the required functionality for India and Chennai. Before I do all the others can I just check some things:
- Do all the subprojects use the quality/importance intersection categories?
- I assume that you are not interested in the extra classes (e.g. Category-class) for this purpose? Just the standard FA-A-GA-B-C-Start-Stub-FL-List classes?
- — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:34, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I like our categories...I think these project templates put too much emphasis on interface. :) If there is a way to hide the categories from the bottom of the talk page, that would be great.
- Back to the testing: 1) yes, all sub-projects use quality/importance intersection categories. 2) category, template and extra classes do not use intersection...just the standard quality classes (FL, GA etc.).
- I tested the category class, the new template is not ignoring the importance value. Please check the Template:WP India/sandbox/testcases again. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 12:03, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, so the way importance is treated on these non-articles is as follows:
- If no importance is specified, then NA-importance will automatically be used. (Therefore every article gets an importance and the following table will add up to the correct total.)

- I was surpised pre=yes worked in the new template. We had a big discussion with some Pakistani editors about the banner posting Indian flag to pre-Indepedence articles. The pre=yes was the neutral outcome of the discussion.
- If no class value is added, the new banner is automatically adding Template class. Is that a normal thing?
- We had customized the Indian banner a bit with the field parameter. This can used when you are not really starting a project, but would like to check the feasibility for one. Category:India articles using field parameter are the articles that are marked with this parameter. We got to decide what to with these.
- There are still some missing intersection categories that apply to NA importance.

- That's called attention to detail ;)
- On a template talk page, yes the banner will automatically deduce class=Template. Similarly with categories, portals and images.
- Hmm, I have added some support for {field} in the sandbox now. Do you really want the quality and importance assessment as well? Because it seems that most of the necessary categories don't exist. So I've disabled them for now. Do you also need field1, field2 and field3?
- I thought the NA categories were being supressed so I don't quite understand that. Maybe WOSlinker will be able to fix that.

[edit] Categories awry
I happened to notice that the categories associated by adding this template seem to have gone awry. Please look into WP:IN1S and you will find all the totals columns have very low counts. These seem to come from the 'project level' categories, like Category:WikiProject Indian cities articles. I also noticed that the project level category is not found in the talk pages either even for the handful that are shown in the category.
Is this the new intended behaviour of this template? Should the statistics processing be changed to pick the totals by adding up individual counts? For example see the first one Category:WikiProject Indian geography articles - the content from this category shows a total of 27 on the statistics page. Moreover the talk pages do not show this category.
Hope the last two editors (admin) can look into this aspect. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 12:25, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, I see what you mean. It seems to have been forgotten. I can certainly fix it, just give me a couple of days. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:07, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Is Category:WikiProject India (media) articles supposed to be used somehow? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:32, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- That was created for "field=media" parameter. WP:IN1S is still not good. The sub-projects do not have a listing of categories, templates etc. They are all showing zeroes. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 02:11, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
- I do not remember that working in the past either (last year and half). FYI and if that can help in figuring out the problem... VasuVR (talk, contribs) 02:59, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I think there are some errors on that page. Certainly, the problem is not with the template. You know you can use parser functions instead of a bot to calculate these numbers? That means they are always up to date. For example, produces:
| B | C | Start | Stub | List | Category | Disambig | File | Needed | Portal | Redirect | Template | NA | ??? | Total | ||||
| 6 | 5 | 12 | 26 | 19 | 239 | 2,250 | 5 | 20 | 73 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 35 | 2 | 92 | 2,786 |
-
- There is also a template which can handle category intersections, e.g. produces:
| Andhra Pradesh articles |
Importance | ||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top | High | Mid | Low | ??? | Total | ||
| Quality | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 6 | |
| 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 5 | ||
| 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 5 | 12 | ||
| B | 1 | 5 | 7 | 0 | 8 | 26 | |
| C | 0 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 9 | 19 | |
| Start | 2 | 12 | 36 | 33 | 151 | 239 | |
| Stub | 2 | 14 | 87 | 182 | 1960 | 2250 | |
| 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 5 | ||
| List | 0 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 16 | 20 | |
| ??? | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 5 | |
| Total | 14 | 44 | 139 | 229 | 2252 | 426 | |
-
- Have a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Assessment/Statistics/new and see what you think. Unfortunately, there is a limit of 500 of these functions on one page, so the ones at the bottom are not working. It would be necessary to split this page. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:42, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
Looks good... I have a suggestion then. Split it in such a way that all the state task forces are moved to a separate page and the non-states items are in the main statistics page (and link from each page to the other). VasuVR (talk, contribs) 16:55, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Indian cinema icon
editprotected Can the icon for the Indian cinema taskforce be changed to File:Indiafilm.svg instead of File:Tricolor.svg. It is the standard logo for the taskforce. - Kollision (talk) 10:48, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
[edit] Move?
I'm proposing to move this template to Template:WikiProject India. This is the standard naming conventions for WikiProject banners. Some advantages of this convention are described at Wikipedia:Banner standardisation. The current name WP India would remain as a redirect and no articles would need to be updated. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:31, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
[edit] Portal Image
editprotected Can the portal image be updated from Portal.svg to Portal-puzzle.svg to match that used by the portal template. Thanks -- WOSlinker (talk) 12:03, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
[edit] /Categories=
I notice the /categories page has been deleted: doubtless due to upgrades to the way the template works. I have removed refernces to the subpage form the docs. Let me know if the page shouldn't have been deleted and I'll investigate further. Rich Farmbrough, 19:07, 5 October 2010 (UTC).

For the Wikipedia:WikiProject Jammu and Kashmir parameter in this template, could you replace the Flag of India image icon with File:Jammu-Kashmir-flag.svg, the official flag of the state? Mar4d (talk) 02:48, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

- Not so much that they are not working, but they have never been implemented. If needed I could easily add importance ratings for these projects. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:57, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

- Martin, I have created the assessment categories for the two projects, Indian railways and Education in India. Please update the template to allow importance assessment for these two projects. I had moved Railways in India to Indian railways to be consistent with the Indian roads project. Thanks, — Ganeshk (talk) 03:51, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
- You don't seem to have created Category:Indian railways articles by importance and subcats, which is what was initially requested? Do you want quality or importance or both? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:11, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

When you have worked out what you want, perhaps you could update Template:WikiProject India/sandbox with the new code and then add editprotected and I'll deploy. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:14, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Education and railways parameters
This template currently does not populate assessment categories for WikiProjects Education in India and Indian railways even if "education=yes" or "railyways=yes" are specified. Is this an accidental oversight or an intentional omission? I was prepared to edit the template but want to make sure that I would not be going against a project-level decision or consensus. Thank you, -- Black Falcon (talk) 05:46, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
- Please see discussion in July above. It looks like the necessary categories have not been created, after which the template could be changed. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 06:25, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
-
- I had seen that discussion but wasn't sure if anything came of it in the intervening months. It appears that almost all of the requisite quality assessment categories exist, and it is the importance and quality-and-importance assessment categories that are missing. I will create them tomorrow (it's quite late where I am) and change the template as needed. Thank you for your clarifictation, -- Black Falcon (talk) 09:21, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

-
- I have created the needed categories (see Category:WikiProject Indian railways articles and Category:WikiProject Education in India articles) and made the necessary change (diff) to the assessment template. -- Black Falcon (talk) 01:34, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
-
I just realized that WikiProject India also utilizes quality-and-importance intersection categories, so I will create those categories also, pending clarification in the section below. -- Black Falcon (talk) 08:43, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
[edit] Unassessed-Class
There exists significant duplication within WikiProject India's category structure stemming from the fact that both 'Unassessed' and 'Unassessed-Class' categories are populated by this template—see e.g. Category:Unassessed India articles and Category:Unassessed-Class India articles.
I propose standardizing these categories to one usage, Unassessed {topic} articles, in order to:
- Establish consistency with nearly all other WikiProjects (see here);
- Ensure compatibility with various WikiProject-related templates, such as ;
- Eliminate tens of duplicate and empty assessment categories; and
- Simplify Template:WikiProject India by removing approximately 1,600 characters which are currently being used to append the '-Class' prefix to unassessed articles.
Please note that this change would not impact any other '-Class' categories, such as Category:Stub-Class India articles or Category:Start-Class West Bengal articles.
If there are no objections, I can modify this template, prompt User:Cydebot (a category creation bot) to perform all category name changes, and then manually carry out any necessary reorganization and updating of links. Thank you, -- Black Falcon (talk) 08:42, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
- Good catch. The India level unassessed articles are tagged under Category:Unassessed India articles. The Category:Unassessed India articles contains only sub-categories. There seems to be no duplication of sub-categories - they either go in one or the other. Probably earlier editors had two different views and this has propagated as per individual preferences and no one yet has taken effort to put it under one. Your attempt would be the first in this case, I think. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 09:06, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
-
- Thanks. :) You're right, of course... the duplication is not in the form of articles appearing in both categories (as you say, they either go in one or the other) but rather of two unassessed categories existing for each subproject: Category:Unassessed Hyderabad articles and Category:Unassessed-Class Hyderabad articles; Category:Unassessed West Bengal articles and Category:Unassessed-Class West Bengal articles; and so on. The 'Unassessed' categories tend to directly contain talk pages and the 'Unassessed-Class' categories tend to contain quality-and-importance subcategories, but I think they can be combined in the manner of, say, Category:GA-Class Indian history articles. -- Black Falcon (talk) 09:41, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
-
- My suggested modification of the template is now ready at Template:WikiProject India/sandbox. -- Black Falcon (talk) 20:08, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
-
-
- As there appear to be no objections, I will proceed with this change in next day or so. -- Black Falcon (talk) 00:08, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Empty 'field' categories
Are the following categories and their subcategories, all of which are empty, still needed?
- Category:WikiProject India (architecture) articles
- Category:WikiProject India (food) articles
- Category:WikiProject India (railways) articles - superseded by Category:WikiProject Indian railways articles?
- Category:WikiProject India (religion) articles
- Category:WikiProject India (school) articles - superseded by Category:WikiProject Education in India articles?
- Category:WikiProject India (science) articles
- Category:WikiProject India (sports) articles
They were created after this series of changes to the project banner enabled categorization of India articles by the field parameter, and were emptied in October 2009 when this template was standardized with Template:WPBannerMeta. Affected articles continue to be categorized within Category:India articles using field parameter. -- Black Falcon (talk) 00:36, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
