Project Link is broken[edit]

{{editprotected}}

Please fix the Project Link, it links to the article Japan instead of WP:WikiProject Japan. Deleting the parameter "PROJECT_LINK" should do it. (This error is evident when the banner is nested in WPBS. 76.66.193.69 (talk) 06:53, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Redirect class[edit]

A few days ago Category:Redirect-Class Japan-related articles was deleted at the same time that Redirect-Class was dropped by default from {{WPBM}}, presumably because it was apparent that this project was not using this class. However I believe a bot is going round and tagging redirects ([1] for example). This is just to let you know that if you would like to use Redirect-Class you will need a custom class mask. Please ask if you need help with this. If you don't care about it, then they will stay classified as NA-Class. Regards, — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:40, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Implementation of photo needed by prefecture[edit]

On the sandbox version I've put a possible implementation of what you're trying to do. If you specify the prefecture using the parameter pref-photo, it should put it into the right category. For example

{{WikiProject Japan/sandbox|pref-photo=Aichi}}

Photographs for this location (or item located) in Aichi Prefecture have been requested to improve the article's quality.

How do you make it able to handle multiple prefectures? There are some instances where something may be in multiple prefectures (such as a mountain range or national park). ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 09:17, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
You can't. I guess this would be a fairly rare occurence? You could implement a pref-photo-2 parameter on exactly the same lines to allow for a second location. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:18, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
It's uncommon, but not really rare. There is also the default for items which aren't necessarily in a specific location (say a specific model of car, for example). Those would go in Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Japan, so we would need a way to do that. Would adding another note section work, or is there a shorter way by modifying the code to accommodate that? I really appreciate your help with this. :) ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 09:31, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
It might be simplest to have another note with a general photo parameter for this general category. By the way, imageneeded is a more common parameter name. You might like to think about which names make more sense. Anyway I'm off now and will be back later. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:53, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks! ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 09:31, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

More generally, the standalone Template:Reqphoto is, I believe, set up to tackle all of these situations. Is there any advantage of having it all in the project banner? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:55, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

It's too generic for this, so we created {{ReqphotoinJapan}} to handle it, but it would be nice to have it all in the project banner. It just makes it easier to have it consolidated. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 18:24, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I've added pref-photo-2 for a second prefecture, and photo for the general photo needed. I've also added the necessary code for the nested taskforced, which was missing from the banner. Is there anything else you need? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 23:00, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I don't quite understand why {{reqphoto}} is too generic for this? It would allow an editor to put an article into the proper categories for several prefectures, and also into appropriate subject-oriented categories (e.g. photographs of architecture, of birds, of people, of mountains, etc). I prefer not to use customized photo parameters for different WikiProject templates, because it makes automated analysis more difficult, but I hope this works for WP Japan :-) Tim Pierce (talk) 21:53, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
When the {{ReqphotoinJapan}} and {{ReqphotopersoninJapan}} were created, that template couldn't handle all instances of the requests, so the two mentioned templates were created. Now they are being merged into this template. As they will be categorized, I don't see how automated analysis will be more difficult as counting the articles being categorized will be easy. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 00:30, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
PhotoCatBot periodically crawls through articles that have {{reqphoto}} templates and adds appropriate categories to the template based on which wikiproject it's in. Each wikiproject that implements its own customized photo parameters means that I have to add a different customized rule to the bot, and means that it can't take advantage of the other parameters that {{reqphoto}} does support. Why? If the time isn't showing correctly for you, you need to clear your cache. It's not a problem with the code which generates the time, but rather a problem with your browser not correctly updating it whenever you load a page with it. If you read the section you link to, you'll see that's what was written there, too. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 06:29, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
It is not a problem with "my" cache or with "my" browser, it is a problem with Wikipedia caching. It is possible to force the time to refresh by getting Wikipedia to purge its cache, but this is quite obviously a ridiculous "workaround" to the problem, and not something that users could possibly be expected to do, or realise that they had to do, in order to get this feature to work. 86.181.174.197 (talk) 11:07, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
well, most of them are never going to see it since most people who use the site never even visit the talk pages. Regardless of that, I've added a purge feature so you can force your browser to behave properly. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 08:57, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Adding "Ainu Task Force" to template?[edit]

Greetings, per discussion at WP:JA I've created a page for Wikipedia:WikProject Japan/Ainu task force. Support for TF (and no objections thus far) is here: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Japan#Re-org_at_Category:Ainu.3B_any_interest_in_forming_Ainu_Task_Force.3F

Do I also need to create a TFAinu template using the coding shown a this link: [2] ? Thanks for any help. MatthewVanitas (talk) 03:12, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

I have added the code to the sandbox template. Perhaps you would like to choose an image and add this to the code as well? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:04, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

::Indeed, I'd like to add File:Flag of the Ainu people.png to the template for the TF. Do I need to fill anything out for that, or is it just added by the approving admin? MatthewVanitas (talk) 19:31, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Oh, it's a sandbox, okay. I tried adding it as shown, but it's just displaying a red "x40px". Is it a sizing issue, or what do I need to address? MatthewVanitas (talk) 19:37, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

All the parameters are lower case so ainu must by input as ainu in order for it to apply to the task force. This also applies to all the other task forces as well. If someone puts it in as Ainu with a capital A then it would not appear. You might want to add Ainu as an alias to allow it to be counted as well. In my experience many people will naturally capitalize the first letter of a place and may not notice it isn't getting picked up. Please let me know if you need anymore help. Would the above be correct? ミーラー強斗武 (talk) 06:18, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

No. Task forces can only be numbered 1 to 10. You would need another {{WPBannerMeta/hooks/taskforces}} --Redrose64 (talk) 13:06, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
  • Deactivating until you have a usable coding option... Rose, do you think there is enough demand to expand {{WPBannerMeta/hooks/taskforces}} to accept more than 10? Perhaps a conversion to Lua to allow an unlimited number (to prevent degrading performance)? Just some questions / ideas... Technical 13 (talk) 15:50, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
It's been suggested before, and declined. It's not difficult to chain another {{WPBannerMeta/hooks/taskforces}} off the bottom of one that's already there - indeed, {{WikiProject Japan}} does this twice already for a chain of three, which allows for 30 taskforces. The champion is, I believe, {{WikiProject United States}} which has a total of 11 chained together, although it has somewhat fewer than the 110 taskforces that would permit. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:19, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
  • Rose, I'm sorry, was that an answer to the first question or second? I'm guessing first, which leaves the Lua option question unanswered, and now that I see the breadth and depth of this, I'm thinking this is a great idea. @Mr. Stradivarius, Theopolisme:, I know you both have at least some experience with Lua, and I know Mr. S has experience with exactly this kind of module, what do you two think about it? Technical 13 (talk) 16:30, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
Mostly an answer to the first. But there is also no need to convert to Lua unless there is a demonstrable need to do so: it makes templates much more difficult to debug, and darned-near impossible to work out which parameters are supported when writing the documentation that somebody else forgot to do. Anyway, this should do it. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:14, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
There has been some talk about converting {{WPBannerMeta}} to Lua, and it was decided that a rewrite would be better than a drop-in replacement, due to the template's complexity and the opportunity that we have to simplify things. It would probably be better to focus on that rather than convert all the hook templates. There has been some progress on the rewrite at Module:WikiProjectBanner, but there is still a way to go yet. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 21:47, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
