Terminal (also referred to as Terminal.app) is a terminal emulator included in Apple's Mac OS X operating system. It originated in Mac OS X's predecessors, NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP, and allows the user to interact with the computer through a command line interface. On Mac OS X, Terminal is located in the /Applications/Utilities folder.

Terminal first appeared in Mac OS 10.0.

Version 2.0 of Terminal shipped with Mac OS 10.5 had some notable new features, including tabbed windows to allow for better organization of multiple terminal sessions, and themes for providing several distinctive looks for Terminal.
In addition, the split-window feature was removed. Also, though not a feature of Terminal itself, the SSH client invoked from Terminal includes a keychain agent for reading passphrases from the Mac OS X login keychain to unlock private keys.
