Terry Brown is a martial arts Instructor and author of the book English Martial Arts.[1] [2] He is the senior instructor of the Company of Maisters,[3] a school he founded which focuses on traditional English combat.
In 1997, to re-introduce traditional English fighting systems to modern martial artists, Terry Brown legally reformed the Company of Maisters for the purpose of researching traditional English fighting systems and sharing that knowledge with the public.[4] The modern Company of Maisters has no direct connection with the original Company of Maisters.
The weapons studied by Brown's Company of Maisters are broadsword, backsword, bastard sword, two-hand sword, sword & buckler, sword & shield, sword & dagger, cudgel, shortstaff (quarterstaff), billhook, threshalls (corn flails), mauls (mallets), battle-axe, halbard, spear, pike, half-pike.[5]
Terry Brown also has a significant background in kung fu.[6]
According a review in Counter Culture Magazine[unreliable source?], Brown's book (English Martial Arts) includes kung fu techniques inappropriate for HEMA.[7]
