The Buddha of Suburbia was a 1993 BBC television miniseries, directed by Roger Michell. It was based on the novel of the same name by Hanif Kureishi. The programme starred Naveen Andrews as the main character, Karim Amir. Other cast members included David Bamber, Steven Mackintosh, Harish Patel, Brenda Blethyn, Roshan Seth, Jemma Redgrave and Philip Franks. The programme's soundtrack was written and performed by David Bowie.
Segments for the series were filmed at Naveen Andrews' old school Emanuel School. The 500 extras used in the series were real punks, skinheads, suedeheads, hippies and musicians cast by actress Barbie Wilde.
