The Crash Engine is a rock band originally from Eugene, Oregon, but who now claim Portland, Oregon as home. The current members are Alex Heller (bass, vocals), Tom Dawson (guitar, backing vocals), and Dana Rapley (drums, backing vocals). The band first began in 2002 when Heller met Dawson in Schaffer Hall of the University of Oregon Dorms. The teenagers started an acoustic trio called “Here On Out” with guitarist Garrett Cimino (who later formed A Drive On Lynn.) After numerous all ages shows in Eugene, the band dissolved. Heller and Dawson went on to pursue the The Crash Engine, a four piece electric rock band with drummer Aaron Jester. After releasing two EPs and touring the western states with southern California indie rockers, Respira, (who’s bass player and singer went on to form Amestory) the band was approached by producer Loren Israel (Plain White Tees) and signed a brief development deal.
The band then moved to Portland, where they recorded their first full-length album Extravagaria, with engineer Stephan Hawkes (Kill Your Ex) on Minute Morning Records. Soon after, they enlisted the talents of drummer Dana Rapley. Singer Heller switched from guitar to bass and the band began performing as a trio.
In 2007, The Crash Engine caught the attention of Deep Elm Records (The Appleseed Cast, Brandtson) who featured the song “The Sky Retreats” on their famous Emo Diaries compilation. Shortly after, they played the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin, Texas, and continue to keep a busy tour schedule throughout the United States and Canada. The band’s unique sound bridges the gap between Indie Rock, Emo-Punk, Northwest Grunge and Melodic Pop.
In 2009, The Crash Engine parted ways with Minute Morning Records and began self promotion through their own label.
