Chad Morgan and Ashley Sera have just moved into their new apartment. They've gotten engaged and are about to start a new life together. Everything seems perfect, except for one thing - their next-door neighbor, Mr. Reed. After a bizarre encounter, Chad begins to realize that if he doesn't unlock the secret to this mysterious voyeur soon, he may lose everything - including his mind

[edit] Production

Shot digitally for an estimated budget of $3,000, principal photography began on September 6, 2008 and wrapped in late February 2009. Most of the movie takes place in director Dom Portalla's actual apartment.[1]

[edit] Release

The Darkness Within premiered on October 30, 2009 at the historic Brattle Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[2] It has since screened as part of the Magnolia Film Festival in February 2010, the Fright Night Film Fest in July 2010, the Rock And Shock Film Festival in October 2010 and the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival in December 2010.[3][4][5][6]

[edit] Reception

Reception has been generally favorable. The Oxford Film Freak called the film "a captivating psychological drama that had me completely hooked."[7] Planet Of Terror referred to the movie as "A taut thriller with one hell of a twist."[8] Enter The Man-Cave remarked "this whole movie is a set of quick jabs and the final act throws a nasty right hook that knocked me to the mat."[9]. It has also received positive reviews from horror related film blogs The Liberal Dead, From Midnight, With Love and Hey! Look Behind You!.[10][11][12]

Kevin Matthews of FlickFeast.com gave the film a marginal recommendation, making reference to technical and pacing issues. However, he notes that "The third, and final act, really rewards the viewer and ties everything up nicely. It also does enough to elevate the entire movie to something much more than its basic framework. The execution throughout may not be perfect but the material is solid."[13]
