The F3 Derby involves Australia's Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners.[1] They are considered to be a fierce rivalry in the A-League due to being two of the closest teams geographically. The name is a reference to the Pacific Motorway (also known as the F3), which connects the Central Coast to Newcastle

The rivalry started before a ball was even kicked when some former Newcastle fans of the old NSL became fans of the new franchise of Central Coast and the rest remained loyal to Newcastle United. The rivalry took off in the first ever game between the clubs where Nik Mrdja broke the leg of Andrew Durante in a horror tackle.[2]

History

The teams first met in a qualification match for the 2005 OFC Club Championship. The Mariners won the match in a penalty shootout.[3] The rivalry quickly became heated when Nik Mrdja broke Andrew Durante's leg in that match.[4]

In the 2007–08 A-League, both teams had strong seasons. The Mariners won the Premiership on goal difference from the Jets after winning on the final weekend of the competition.[5] After the Mariners defeated the Jets in the major semi-final, the Jets beat Queensland Roar resulting in the teams meeting in the 2008 A-League Grand Final. The Jets won the game, with Mark Bridge scoring the only goal midway through the second half. Mariners 'keeper Danny Vuković was sent off late in the match for making contact with the referee after appealing for a penalty.[6]

In 2013, "the F3" was renamed to "the A1", however, the derby is still officially referred to as the F3 derby.[7]
