The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases & Tissue Therapy
The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases & Tissue Therapy is a large ophthalmology (eye) hospital and a post-graduate Medical College at Frantsuzsky Boulevard 49/51 in Odessa, Ukraine. It was founded in 1936 by Vladimir Petrovich Filatov.
It was founded in Odessa on April 7, 1936 by the Institute of Experimental Ophthalmology with a staff of 20 employees (building on the Proletarian Boulevard, now the French Boulevard, completed in 1939). The Institute is known as the State Institution "The Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy. Filatov of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. There are 700 staff member at the instutue including 27 professors.
The Institute is spread over a large area and consists of many buildings. The institute has an OPD block with a Polyclinic. Another building houses various ophthalmological departments including - Cataract, Pediatric ophthalmology, Burns and Trauma, Vitreo-Retinal Diseases, Cornea, Laser treatments, Uveal Diseases, Glaucoma, Ophthalmic oncology. This main building also has various categories of rooms for patients to stay as well as operating rooms for various departments. The laboratories are housed in another building which also has a large auditorium, archives, library and an outsourced optical shop. Administrative, Vivarium, Hostels, Residences etc are located in other adjoining buildings.

The purpose of this institute is to study the pathogenesis of eye diseases and to develop new treatments for eye diseases, as well as training of scientific personnel. The Institute has a special scientific council. Master's and doctoral degrees are awarded in Ophthalmology.
Institute organizes scientific conferences, collects and analyzes statistical information on ocular morbidity in Ukraine, and is involved in the training of ophthalmologists at all levels. The Institute is affiliated to Ophthalmology Department of the Odessa Medical University, where training of interns, clinical residents, full-time and part-time graduate students is conducted. The institutes have already trained numerous professionals in all fields of ophthalmology.
The Institute of Ophthalmology Congress is held in Ukraine once in every four years in the month of May. Last congress was held in 2010, which was XII congress organized by the institute. "Filatov read" - scientific and practical conference, held at the Institute each year (except for the years of the Congress). The Institute also organizes an annual inter-regional scientific-practical conference in Ukraine. 2011 conference was held in in the city of Lugansk and 2012 conference was held in the city of Uzhgorod.
