The Great Rivalry is a rivalry between the William Horlick High School and the Washington Park High School athletic teams in Racine, Wisconsin. The rivalry between the schools' football teams originated in 1928, when the two schools opened, and has since expanded into other sports.[1]

[edit] History

Prior to 1928, there was only one high school in Racine: Racine High School. This changed when Horlick and Park opened to students, at which time previous classmates were split between the schools. The initial tension caused by the split, combined with the schools' geographic proximity to each other, formed the basis of the rivalry. The teams have played once every year since the schools opened, with the exception of the 1943 and 2008 seasons when the teams played twice.[2][3][4][5]

The only playoff game between the two teams was played on November 1, 2008, in which Park defeated Horlick, 49-28.[2][6] In the most recent meeting on September 9, 2011, Park defeated Horlick, 28-0.[7]

[edit] Other sports

It is common for Park/Horlick sporting events to have significantly higher attendance than other events the schools participate in individually.[8] As both teams are part of the same WIAA section, Park and Horlick teams often play each other in the sectional finals for the right to advance to the state championship tournament.[9][10]
