"The Hamptons" is the eighty-fifth episode of the NBC sitcom Seinfeld. This was the 21st episode for the 5th season. It aired on May 12, 1994. This was the final produced episode of the fifth season, although it aired as the penultimate episode of the season.
[edit] Plot
The four principal characters travel to the Hamptons to see a baby; they find that the baby is altogether ugly. While on the beach, Kramer finds a filled lobster trap and thinks the catch is his, unaware that it's a commercial lobster trap. George's girlfriend (Melora Walters) goes sun tanning topless while he goes out to get tomatoes, and George is seen naked by Jerry's girlfriend Rachel (Melanie Smith), to whom he tries in vain to explain that, having just gotten out of the cold water, he is a victim of penile "shrinkage."
Elaine is thrilled to be termed "breathtaking" by a doctor (guest star Richard Burgi) until she finds he uses the same adjective to describe the baby. Rachel tells George's girlfriend about his "shrinkage" and she leaves. George gets revenge on Rachel by tricking her into eating lobster, which is not kosher. Kramer then gets arrested for lobster poaching and must pick up garbage on the side of the road. The working title for this episode was "The Ugly Baby."[citation needed]
[edit] References in Popular Culture
- The "shrinkage" incident is referred to in the Arrested Development episode "Prison Break-In".
- Following an October 12, 2008 National Football League game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Detroit Lions, Fox Sports aired a post game segment in the Vikings locker room. Vikings owner Zygi Wilf was presenting the game ball to Vikings head coach Brad Childress' son who had just enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. In the background, Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe was shown unclothed for a moment before covering himself with a towel. According to the NFL and Fox Sports, the image lasted a fifth of a second. Fox Sports apologized for airing the image. Through his agent, Shiancoe said he was embarrassed by the unintentional incident. Displaying a good sense of humor, he later remarked that at least he did not "just come out the swimming pool" in reference to the "shrinkage" incident.
