[edit] Plot

Ryan, suspension lifted, is once again roaming the halls. Marissa spots him and greets him with a kiss that he hastily converts into an awkward hug. They talk about Oliver briefly and she says she just wants things to go back to normal. During an awkward pause, they both say that they will be at Kirsten's Valentine's Day dance.

Sandy arrives at Kirsten's office for lunch, telling her that because he has to meet with the city inspectors about the restaurant, he'll probably be just a little late to her dance. Kirsten forbids it, and they start to argue about who supports the other's ventures more.

Meanwhile, Seth drops by Summer's bedroom, saying he has always been in love with her. They kiss, and have sex for the first time. Afterward, they lay together, not knowing what comes next.

Over in the pool house, Marissa starts making out with Ryan, but he stops her. Stuttering apologies, she leaves.

The next morning, Seth comes into the pool house with news of his tryst with Summer, and confides in Ryan that he's insecure about his sexual prowess. Ryan, in turn, tells Seth that he fears his relationship with Marissa is coming to an end. Meanwhile, Summer tells Marissa what happened with Seth, and the two commiserate about their own romantic problems. Summer tells her that Oliver's suicide attempt wasn't her fault, but says that Ryan kept trying to warn her and she didn't listen.

Back at the Cohen home, Seth tells Sandy about sleeping with Summer. They have a father-son talk — the first they've ever had about sex — in which Sandy reassures his son that the first time is always awkward, and gives him a few tips on foreplay. With renewed confidence, Seth visits Summer, wanting to have sex again. His attempts at seduction fail, however, and Summer ends up having to take charge.

Outside the banquet hall, Ryan meets with his ex-girlfriend Theresa, who is running the dance, and tells her all about his life since they last saw each other. Marissa comes outside looking for Ryan and meets Theresa, leading to an uncomfortable situation.

Seth drops in on Ryan, who's putting the finishing touches on his suit. Seth confesses that he and Summer had sex again, but it was still terrible, so he thinks the relationship might be over. Elsewhere, Summer is also considering skipping the dance tonight, but Marissa wants to go because Theresa is going to be there.

At the dance, Ryan and Seth stand around moping when Theresa comes over with a tray of food. Summer and Marissa spot this from a balcony. Marissa feels threatened by the presence of Ryan's past. Julie Cooper arrives, and she and Kirsten also spend some time moping. Julie heads out, which catches Luke's attention. At another table, Seth approaches Summer, saying that he isn't ready for this new step in their relationship.

Ryan's getting some air outside when Theresa just happens to join him; she confesses that she took this job hoping to run into him, and he asks if she wants to go somewhere. Inside, Marissa is in tears. Sandy comes over to console her, saying that Ryan behaves this way because he fears abandonment. Kirsten, overhearing all of this, realizes that maybe Valentine's Day isn't ruined after all. She later finds that Sandy decorates the master bedroom for the holiday just to please her, and the two make up.

Marissa leaves with Summer — just in time to see Ryan getting into Theresa's car. Back at the pool house, the old couple is trading old tales. Next door, Luke is back on Julie Cooper's porch, saying that he doesn't want her to be alone. Full of wine and flattered by Luke's sweet talk, Julie kisses him and invites him in.

As the night winds down, Seth sits alone in his room when Summer barges in. She lets him know that she was also a virgin up until the other day. They agree to start over, and slow dance together.

A nervous Marissa barges into the pool house demanding to know where Theresa is. She begs for Ryan's forgiveness, but he doesn't know if they should be together. Ryan and Marissa break up, and Marissa leaves crying.
