[edit] Company history

The List is an independent limited company based in Scotland founded in October 1985 by Robin Hodge who remains the publisher,[1] Nigel Billen and Sarah Hemming (the founding editors).

The List's aim was to publicise and promote the wide range of arts, events and entertainment taking place throughout the year in Scotland by publishing a quality general interest magazine in Scotland.

The company continues to follow its original aim though now has a wider publishing programme including a range of new media activities and print titles for the eating and drinking sector, the Edinburgh Festival, Scottish students and music events.

The List also publishes The Midgie magazine aimed at independent travellers. The Midgie can be found in over 100 hostels and other outlets across Scotland.

The List is a member of the PPA.

In early 2011, it was announced that the magazine would switch from fortnightly to four-weekly editions, with more emphasis being placed on its website.[1]

The magazine sponsors an annual "Surprise Movie" screening at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.[2]

[edit] Circulation

Readership of The List varies over the year and is linked to the major events and cycles in the Scottish arts and entertainment scene. The List is a member of the ABC. The magazine had a print run of 18,000 copies in early 2011.[1]

[edit] Content

All events listings are published free of charge and are accompanied by critical comment offering a guide to readers as to what is worth seeing and why. Articles and features are also included previewing forthcoming events in greater detail.

[edit] Further publishing activities

Throughout the year The List also publishes a number of special issues to support major arts events and festivals in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. These include the Edinburgh Festival, T in the Park and the Glasgow and Edinburgh Hogmanay celebrations.

It also publishes a series of guides such as am annual Eating & Drinking Guide of restaurant reviews, The Larder good food directory and a Student Guide.

[edit] The LIST Card

In 2008 The List launched a dining card scheme. Card holders are entitled to 2 for 1 dining at many restaurants across Scotland.

[edit] Research and Information Services

Beyond the day-to-day publishing, The List is also the official supplier of event information in all parts of Scotland to Visit Scotland for publication online and in print. It also supplies regional information on a contract basis to a number of other major clients.

The List has a permanent staff of about 30 people and uses the services of around 30 freelancers. Former members of staff include Nick Barley, editor from 2003, who went on to become director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival in 2009.[3] Past contributors have included Penny Thomson, the former director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival.[4]
