The Mill (post-production)
The Mill is respected for high-end visual effects, award-winning moving image, design and digital projects for the advertising, games and music industries. The Mill is usually well represented at the numerous Advertising and Visual Effects awards ceremonies world-wide each year. Some of the major advertising campaigns include Sony, Nike, Levis, Honda and Adidas.
Founding and Early Years
In 1990, Robin Shenfield and Pat Joseph opened The Mill, a post-production and visual effects studio, in Soho, London. Starting as a visual effects house for the advertising industry, it was the first VFX company in Europe to use exclusively digital methods.
In the year following its creation, the company was working with some big names, such as ad agencies AMV, BBH and Saatchi & Saatchi. Over the next few years, they went on to work on a number of iconic commercials with some major brands, including Levi’s, Playstation, and Coca-Cola.
2002 saw The Mill open a studio in New York, becoming first the UK visual effects house to do so. The extension of operations to the US was successful, with the company growing to employ over 100 staff by 2009. The Mill NY won the D&AD pencil for its work on Coca-Cola’s ‘It’s Mine’ spot and a Cannes Gold Lion Award for its design work on the OFFF International Film Festival 2010 Opening Titles.
Following on from the success of this studio, The Mill Los Angeles was launched in 2007 - the first UK visual effects house to open on the West Coast - and once again, the new venture was highly successful: In 2010, the team won the VES Award for Outstanding Animated Character in a Commercial or Broadcast Programme for AMF's 'Caterpillar'.
In 2013 The Mill opened an office in Chicago, in partnership with Whitehouse Post.
The Mill is involved in a range of visual effects projects, from the design of simple characters to the complex creation of CGI sports stadiums. The company’s supervisors, producers and artists support all stages of production, from pre-visualisation and conceptual artwork, shoot supervision, 3D, 2D and colour grading through to delivery of the finished project. Recent commercial projects include: Nike ‘Write the Future’, Axe ‘Susan Glenn’, Call of Duty 'Eclipse - Surprise', Audi ‘Hummingbird’, Old Spice ‘Terry Chest Drum’, Heineken 'Crack The Case', Playstation ‘The All Star’ and Progressive ‘Meet the Policy’.
The Mill also owns online advertising approval, archiving and distribution site, BEAM.TV
