The Real Housewives... is a reality series which airs in the United States on the cable network Bravo, and various other broadcasters internationally. The series follows the lives of relatively affluent, bourgeois housewives and professional women in the suburban or urban areas of several American cities, and the suffix portion of the title takes on the name of that metropolitan region.

The first Real Housewives series, The Real Housewives of Orange County, premiered in March 2006. There are currently six different versions of the series airing at various times throughout the year; the shows follow women in Orange County; New York City; Atlanta; New Jersey; Beverly Hills; and Miami. On March 15, 2011, Bravo Executive Andy Cohen announced that no new Real Housewives series are in production, and Real Housewives of Miami would be the last installment in the franchise.

The first four series entered weekday broadcast syndication in the majority of U.S. markets on September 13, 2010, with episodes of The Real Housewives of Orange County.[1] The Real Housewives of Atlanta started airing episodes in the syndicated time slot on October 25, 2010; The Real Housewives of New York on November 29, 2010; and The Real Housewives of New Jersey on January 17, 2011. More episodes of Orange County and an encore of Atlanta finished off the season. However, the package was not renewed for a further second season due to low ratings.

The title is a play on the television series Desperate Housewives, which provided the base concept for the series.[2] However, the premise of the fictional series, detailing the life of one suburban neighborhood, is not applied to the real series, where the women can be either next door or several miles apart in their respective regions, but still are close friends or in overlapping social circles (as some of the subjects are antagonistic to each other). The basic theme of these shows can be categorized as First World Problems.[3]
