According to their website, The Vitamin String Quartet (VSQ) comprises a rotating collective of Los Angeles musicians widely known for its tributes to cutting-edge rock acts. They have released a series of string quartet tribute albums, released by Vitamin Records using a wide array of instruments, but primarily violins and violas. Musicians who have played on Vitamin's string quartet tributes have also recorded with A Perfect Circle and Christina Aguilera [1], and performed live with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, and the Dixie Chicks.

"Vitamin String Quartet is about applying rock n' roll attitude to classical technique," says Tom Tally, a violist and arranger who has performed on and produced over thirty-five Vitamin String Quartet albums.

In 2008 Disney invited VSQ to contribute a track to the second tribute to Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. The film's original score was re-recorded by bands like Korn, The All-American Rejects, Plain White T's, and Amy Lee of the band Evanescence.[2]

Their music has been heard in film and on television, most notably on the finale of So You Think You Can Dance.[3] Several groups including As I Lay Dying and Dream Theater have initiated and participated in the creation of VSQ's tribute to their band.

Now VSQ is branching out with a new collection of covers and original songs. This June will see the release of Per-Versions, an album featuring interpretations of songs by revered alternative artists including Cat Power, Sigur Rós, Tom Waits, No Age, and Animal Collective as well as several original songs.[4]

  7. ^ The first run of the album was printed with incorrect album art, as well as listing in the wrong order the tracks— which were hand picked by Mike Portnoy and covered the band's history from When Dream And Day Unite to Train Of Thought. This was corrected in later prints of the album. People with the incorrect art could contact Vitamin Records for a replacement copy. James Curtiss, the Project Coordinator of Vitamin Records, said that the incorrect packaging should be called "a collector's item and leave it at that", as well as stating that "sonically we nailed the sucker, but on the manufacturing side of things, we dropped the ball."
