The Telegraph is a newspaper that serves the St. Louis Metro-East. It was founded in 1836 as the Alton Telegraph by Lawson A. Parks.[1]. It is published seven days a week and has an average daily circulation of 20,441.[2] The paper is owned by Freedom Communications. Until the 1970s, the Telegrpah was previously known as the Alton Daily Telegrpah and then the Alton Evening Telegraph[3]
In 1969, the Alton Telegraph was sued for defamation by a local builder, James C. Green. A jury awarded $9 million. The newspaper could not appeal unless it posted a $10 million bond, and instead declared bankruptcy, eventually settling for slightly more than its insurance limits.[4]
